The 20 Buck Spin connection is still so weird to me. They work with so many good bands, and Vatican Shadow is pretty far outside their usual zone. I love metal, but there's a strain of boring old school metalhead contrarianism that really sucks.

Fernow's not here, but Boyd Rice and Adam Parfrey are. One of the petty reasons I get so mad about this shit is I used to try and sell ad space to Feral House when I worked for Arthur Magazine and he was a total prick and I'm so tired of having to explain to otherwise not-nazis about Death in June.

I dug up this septic mess as a community radio DJ with an understandably unpopular yet surprisingly long-running show that airs in the middle of the night in the Chihuahuan Desert, and a lotta music magazine editors explained to me about Bowie wore a swastika once instead of unpublishing a web page.
It's smaller scale than Platner—Fernow's a self-aware artist doubling-down for a cult of misanthropic fans, not a would-be congressman dodging in cable news interviews—but as the US slips further into fascism it's wild that corny music blogs are as negligent as MSM news orgs about due diligence.
The profile writer—a former Pitchfork editor—offered a mea culpa and pulled a contribution from Fernow from his upcoming book. But you can still find glowing write-ups of Fernow's work as Prurient, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, or Vatican Shadow in almost any publication covering extreme music.
This 20-year-old profile of Fernow where he poses with white supremacist activist Mikko Aspa and recommends a who's who of extremely obscure notoriously racist and neo-nazi bands is still available from "the most trusted voice in music."

Five years after I worked with Jean-Hugues Kabuiku on documenting Fernow's links with a wide array of far right groups, Pitchfork still hasn't bothered to do anything about their wide array of extremely positive coverage of his music. P4k is just one example, but it's the biggest one.

Going from writer to editor to artist to medic to grant writer to yoga teacher and hopefully now that I'm well into late middle age I can settle on a low-paying career that is less dependent on ad revenue, self-promotion, and assessing head trauma in the middle of the night on the side of the road.
