Itβs infuriating and dispiriting how cozy scientists and science communicators were with Epstein. Not just creeps like Krauss and Horner, but former SciAm editor-in-chief Mariette DiChristina corresponding with Epstein in 2014-2015. βHeβs done so much for science, I think that deserves some fun!β

Sleeping dragon with skull in claw and framed with mushrooms
βIn the untouched western forests, where mountains cradle mist and time has little meaning, dragons no longer rule the skies. Instead, they root themselves into the land, choosing sleep over fire.β

Very good representation of how that "crinoid mouth" that's really an angled (rounded?) slice through a set of crinoid stalk segments works.
The "slice" is an erosion related thing that's probably pretty recent (caused by the formation of the little rock clast the crinoid is preserved in).
If the paleo community is going to be serious about Hornerβs connection to Epstein, we also have to be serious about Myhrvoldβs, because guess who contributed photos of animals mating to Epsteinβs birthday book and has been appearing in new paleo papers this year - including the new Spinosaurus.
I am also pretty stunned that
Myhrvoldβs name wasnβt pulled from authorship prior to printing given the Epstein connection revelations. Presumably this will be the last time his name appears on the author list of any respectable publicationβ¦ Right?
In which I provide a few thoughts on the new Spinosaurus species, S. mirabilis.

I also stressed the deep connections between one of the study authors - Nathan Myhrvold - and Geoffrey Epstein to New Scientist. They didn't mention it, neither has anyone else.
Got a Dr.'s appt today to go over the results of my bloodwork I ran a crowdfunder for last month. Pretty sure they're going to want payment for some other past due bills, so buying one of my pins, #suncatchers, or #art prints will go a long way to help!

A digital painting of a small fluffy heterodontosaur dinosaur leaping across snow-covered ground. The dinosaur's colouration is based on the puna tinamou, an Andean bird.
Tianyulong confuciusi, a tiny heterodontosaur dinosaur, looking about as happy in the snow as I. Based on an undescribed specimen at the Beijing Museum of Natural History.
Jurassic Tiaojishan Formation is considered warm temperate to subtropical: mostly mild, but occasional snow days are possible.

Jack Horner Facebook post from 12 Feb. So, while I'm being investigated by SVP, why don't you outraged paleo-people get back to doing some factual science, using the scientific method. You seem to have forgotten how that works, you know, using actual evidence? For Darren, I think this is essential, as I get the impression from his DinoCon disinvite, he's still cheesed off from Kevin and I pummeling him over the whole Darwin sexual selection argument back in 2013. But, I do thank you Darren, for weeding out the invasive nuisances from my social media platforms, I was curious as to how I was going to do that on my own.
For people outside of paleontology:
This senior paleontologist, who married a 19-year-old, visited a convicted pedophile in 2012 & 2016. Is beefing over a conference argument from 13 years ago, angry because he was banned from a family-friendly event across the Atlantic. The level of petty.

Palaeoart, on paper, should not have the same systemic barriers of academia, ergo, be quite diverse. There's no staff hierarchy, lower financial barriers, most is online ergo relatively decentralised. And yet, looking at available stats, palaeoart is as bad as paleontological academia. Why?
Yes and yes
