A GM Mayoral by-election would have been bad, and incredibly expensive for the party. But was a much better testing ground for the "we know you don't like us, but you need to vote for us to stop Reform" strategy and far less damaging than the repercussions of G&D will be.
This has the potential to turn London and the metros from catastrophic to armageddon for Labour. Will impact Scotland and Wales. Worsens the stench of death around Starmer and this government. And it's largely self-inflicted cowardice from a desire not to let Andy Burnham piss inside the tent.
Blocking Burnham gave the Greens the opportunity to hasten their inevitable breakthrough, a first ever by-election victory, weeks in the national spotlight, soon another polling boost and further attention in a way which will net dozens if not hundreds of extra councillors in the coming locals
