If you've ever celebrated being featured in a Critical Distance roundup, please help them keep the lights on. They put in a lot of work for not very much pay (most members are purely volunteer!) and help keep what remains of the game criticism community together

i just finished the forthcoming 3rd book by an author i think is genuinely one of my favorites of all time and i despised it. i dont know what to do with this feeling.

Photo of a blurb that reads:

Bee Recommends

Cujo
Stephen King

Roughly halfway through my journey of reading Stephen King in publication order,* I can pretty confidently say that Cujo is King's best novel. A raw look at animal misery with the bleakest ending he's managed, all buoyed up by the inimitably Kingian digressions into infidelitous tennis instructors and the wacky world of independent corporate marketing.

The rabid dog's there too, of course, and Cujo isn't just a threat; the best aspect of this novel is that we get to spend a sizable chunk of tine in his head as events transpire, which doubles down on both the misery and the terror.

*Check out the Just King Things podcast on the Ranged Touch network; they inspired this journey and talk about each book in ways that both instruct & edify.

Oakland Review of Books

I say all this because--you knew this was coming--I hope you, who are reading this, might feel the same way, and help us out: www.oaklandreviewofbooks.org#/portal/signup

As we gear up for our true launch in a few weeks--multiple pieces a week, which writers are paid to write, that wouldn't have been written otherwise--we're gearing up to be really annoying about asking you to help us out and contribute. That's what "everything we publish will be free, always" costs.

So, a quick note on Oakland Review of Books, or ORB: a handful of us are working to will it into existence, and--aside from a big boost to get started from our friends at @ebbooksellers.bsky.social--it's a self-funded operation whose goal is to exist and enable writing like this.

Just spoke with the owner, Dante, & learned there is a fundraising page. If you are not in a position to give, please consider sharing this widely. Let's blow through that preliminary # -- immediate access to cash gives options the fire would seem at first to destroy.

which is impressive because rendering SGJ's voice is hard, giving the characters their own unique voices within that frame is harder, and i cant even imagine acting through the pacing of those books in such a way that makes them hit like they do when you read them.

i only know Isabella Star LaBlanc's work as the narrator for Stephen Graham Jones audiobooks (the second two novels of the Indian Lake Trilogy, The Baby Sitter Lives, & just today Killer on the Road) but today i remembered she is extremely capable of hitting the exact right notes to make me cry
