Bills Seek to Beef Up Enforcement of Rhode Island's Food Waste Ban - ecoRI News
Legislation regarding food waste and composting is a growing trend in the General Assembly in recent years.
It was after dinner at her sonβs wedding last May at Fort Adams when Rep. Lauren Carson asked one of the waiters: Where was the leftover food going to go? The waiter told her it was all going to go straight into the garbage. She came up with a bill to curb that practice.

Salting roads as a method of preventing ice from forming began in the late 1930s, perhaps in New Hampshire or maybe Detroit.
While safer winter driving is certainly important, throwing tons of salt on the roads comes with side effects, some of which are costly and impact human health in a different way than a head-on collision.

Dumping snow into R.I. waterways is usually banned, but RIDEM made an exception after record-breaking snowfall during the blizzard last month.
Chatted with Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management about snow dumping in Rhode Island waters. DEM knows of two agencies and a business who used Narragansett Bay for excess snow. The environmental agency OK'd dumping despite the risk of pollutants after last week's epic blizzard.

Under the proposed law, municipalities would be authorized to create pest management programs to replace the use of rodenticides.
When she picked up the barred owl, it was limp and trembling. Its eyes were half open, its entire body bruised, and blood was dripping from its beak. The owl died within hours, another casualty of an accidental poison in its food supply.

I Manage $100 Million at a Foundation. Philanthropy Shouldnβt Exist.
Op-ed: Philanthropy is a $1.5 trillion tax shelter. The only way to shift power is to dismantle institutional giving altogether.
As the director of a foundation myself, I heartily agree with this message. Foundations shouldn't exist for more than 5 years each (enough time to figure out what to do with lump sums of money)
That includes RI Foundation.
