I really have thought hard about making my classroom as calming as possible. The children who use it, their nervous systems need soothing!
I noticed today, and then reflected on it, when other adults or more regulated children use it they often become quite sleepy. It works!

Once in my classroom, in the beanbag corner under the Cheeseplant, after a wee while I get down next to them and say “what was that all about?”
All the theory is implicit in the genuine, caring, nurturing sessions that have built a relationship and most importantly TRUST. My school manages these situations with care.
My own behaviour communicates the principles and theory I advocate for.
I shouted across the playground “HAW!! PACK IT IN RIGHT NOW AND GET TO MY CLASSROOM!”.
I turned around and started walking towards the door to fob them in, and guess what, they followed!!
The class teacher was supporting the others and I was available to try and help them. Now did I go outside and bang the mystical Bowlby attachment drums? No. Boxall’s nurture principle pan pipes? No.

A child I work with had a wee moment and ended up in the playground when they weren’t meant to be. My school recognised that this child needed support and I have spent a lot of time with them overcoming barriers and building a relationship.
I work with children who struggle in school for myriad reasons. In my experience one of the biggest barriers to addressing their struggle is convincing them it’s worth it. That they’re worth it!
