This paper raises critical questions about (over)using public-debt-to-GDP as a measure of debt sustainability. Debt/GDP is at historic highs, but interest/GDP and debt/equity show flat or falling patterns. Better theory, smarter metrics and less focus on debt/GDP needed.

On average, female-authored articles take 9 % longer to accept. This gender gap cannot be fully attributed to differences in author affiliation, research productivity, research quality and novelty. The gender composition of editorial boards does not affect acceptance time for female authors. Nevertheless, this gender gap narrows as female representation in an area of research deepens. We find evidence of sub-field differences in this gender gap, consistent with differences in social norms.

Europe has tools at its disposal - including an eyewatering USD 2.4 trillion of European money invested in US stock markets via open-ended equity funds - that it could deploy as leverage in a Europe first strategy against US threats.
Second, and probably most importantly, it's tactically wrong. "No point discussing political opposition to fascism, there won't be elections anyway" cedes victory to your enemies. It's defeatism and nihilism.
It's totally understandable if you're dooming about any facet of the American experiment right now. So your feelings are "valid" in the sense that they represent real anxiety, and I get that. But to vent that anxiety in other people's spaces is wrong for three reasons.

Calling that “inefficient” isn’t realism. It’s a choice to narrow the accounting frame until only one kind of participation counts.
You can do a lot locally with a dedicated group of 15 to 40 people. Regular people should be thinking at that scale rather than at the scale of thousands.
For the Guardian, @bjoernbremer.bsky.social, @siljahausermann.bsky.social and I write about how building new homes is not enough to tackle the housing crisis. Housing is a redistributive issue and progressive policy solutions need to acknowledge that.
