JD is a snotty, soulless social climber who thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room. EB is a sad-sack chiseler who knows he’s weak, dumb, and cowardly. Both worms, but EB at least has some redeeming moments.
And if someone answered “yes”?Would that justify a callous, reckless war of choice waged without public backing or legal foundation, to distract from scandal and slake old grievances sown by our own, old, horrific foreign policy? Horrific precedent, regardless of consequences.
It's an American thing to always believe in hope, and that's an admirable thing (tho can the army always save you?). What's most frightening is that there are times where there is no hope. The end trades on not knowing when that is, but I don't think we should judge people for making a bad bet.
Haven't read the novella but that does fit with the film. I just find that kind of moralizing optimism cheap with what the movie built up. Meeting Lovecraftian despair with fake it til you make it just feels wrong. Like telling a suicide in the Holocaust they should've hoped more.
It is, although the end still feels too much like a punchline for me. I don't like stomping on people in justifiable despair.
You just sound evasive and waffling, man. They made one demand. One. And you mischaracterized them as asking all their demands met, and then invoked cliched, nebulous warnings about coalitions. We don't just need a "not MAGA" leading to another hiatus. We need someone to fight MAGA.
You just said this person’s single demand that the candidate fights MAGA was too divisive a way to build a coalition against MAGA. That’s all I know.
Your demand is that we give up all demands, even when the only demand here is a candidate that stands reliably against MAGA. Seems like a pretty bad strategy for building coalitions to beat MAGA.
We need someone at the top of the ticket who shows that Democrats are ready to reckon with their own failures here
Anyone but MAGA is better, but we’ve run that three times and barely won once, only for him to pave the way for Trump 2 by appointing Garland and running again. There isn’t just a moral, but an instrumental argument here for demanding more from our candidates. That’s the baseline? OK. We need more!
