The South ending Reconstruction and plunging their populations into a backward looking culture and economy until it was forced to modernize by the Civil Rights movement is imo a very clean parallel.

ICE deports family, including deaf boy who wasn’t given his assistive devices — Guardian US California state superintendent says mother and sons arrested during ICE check-in and deported to Colombia

Sigh. Transferring people and not timely updating the ICE detainee locator or telling family or lawyers where they are has long been a tactic of enforced disappearance used by DHS to hinder the filing of habeas petitions to defend rights. This is just one recent example: apple.news/AhOtuCu2FTby...

Caitlin KALINOWSKI over X

I resigned from OpenAl. I care deeply about the Robotics team and the work we built together.
This wasn't an easy call. Al has an important role in national security. But surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got. This was about principle, not people. I have deep respect for Sam and the team, and I'm proud of what we built together.

OpenAI head of robotics just resigned over company deal with the Pentagon saying…

So glad you posted this. I have a granddaughter who has gotten into F1 in a big way, & who is also a Lego aficionado. I saw your post, did a quick search and found the Mercedes F1 version (she’s a team Mercedes fan), so I now have her birthday gift for April sorted.

The Inflation Reduction Act - especially around solar power generation and distribution - was so effective it caused a series of legitimate diplomatic incidents because European allies weren't used to American governments investing in energy resilience so aggressively.

When DOGE Unleashed ChatGPT on the Humanities

Huge NYT article on the back story of those two weeks in March/April 2025 when DOGE illegally terminated hundreds of NEH grants. Gift link!!

These asshole twerps with no brains or education from DOGE really did use ChatGPT to find NEH grants to terminate ILLEGALLY - ruining hundreds lives and destroying hundreds of the greatest humanities projects and partnerships of our time. I’m overwhelmed with rage and anger all over again.

Kalshi employees "kind of understand that without the tweets and the streamers and all of the social-media stuff that the traders do for them, usually just for free, their marketing would be a lot harder," said Jack Campion, 20, a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Kalshi affiliate.
In September, Kalshi briefly signed up a 15-year-old videogame streamer who goes by vertid online to promote its brand on X as an affiliate.
A week later, Kalshi ended the partnership.
"Yo brother, legal team confirmed that we can't work with minors rn," a Kalshi employee wrote to the user in messages reviewed by the Journal. "Kinda sad tbh."

How America Chose Not to Hold the Powerful to Account Our national project of elite impunity

“One way to look at the rise of Donald Trump is as part of a decades-long backlash among the American leadership class to the idea of accountability,” @adamserwer.bsky.social argues:

feels telling about American foreign policy punditry that while many decry the aimlessness of Trump’s monstrously wrong Iran war there were far more outraged columns over the harm done to US power and influence and standing and interests and example when Biden rightly withdrew from Afghanistan.

Six people legally living in the US and legally traveling for work were disappeared by the US government and the only reason we knew about it was because one woman was family friends with a county commissioner and her cell phone pinged to two detention centers.

1. US bombs Iran
2. Oil price goes up a bit, benefitting Russia's petrostate
3. Russia gives Iran targeting info
4. Oil price shoots WAY up
5. US unsanctions Russian oil

No, There Was No ‘Imminent Threat’ From Iran Team Trump shows that words made to mean everything will cease to mean anything.

"These verbal gymnastics, in a vain attempt to find an 'imminent threat' that forced our hand, tell the real story." The US "didn’t launch this war because we had to. We launched it because we could."

Trump will "keep going to war till one of his wars goes bad."

Donald Trump on terrorists: ‘Take out their families’ | CNN Politics Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would kill the families of terrorists in order to win the fight against ISIS.

When Hegseth talks about rolling back rules of engagement, it's presumably rules like these, and a view that *Obama's drone war* was too cautious about avoiding civilian casualties.

Trump in 2015 ran on violence to civilians. He's getting it www.cnn.com/2015/12/02/p...

GA GOP are pushing the same thing this year. The sudden emergence of anti-property tax bills that are coming up in GOP-led state houses leads me to suspect this is a planned national campaign, with prepared talking points, from some rw org. Using canned info appeals to pols who want to skip the work

North Carolina needs smart property tax relief, not reckless revenue limits - NC Budget & Tax Center Property taxes are the backbone of local public services in North Carolina, funding everything from school buildings and libraries to fire departments and parks. But when property values rise rapidly in a housing market already short on affordable options, higher tax bills can strain incomes and displace long-time residents. That reality has prompted renewed legislative…

Property taxes are crucial for funding local services — so why are NC lawmakers trying to impose tax limits that would end up harming local communities?

In my U.S. Civil Rights Movements class, we spend a lot of time thinking about historical memory. When movements get reduced to a few iconic leaders, the collective labor that made change possible disappears from view. It also obscures an important lesson: collective action is effective & difficult.

A cool thing is that religious death cults like American Evangelicals are so obsessed with their paranoid and unhinged fears l that when they are granted even a bit of power they move heaven and earth to manifest them in the world and create the Armageddon they have always desired.
