It's a ZX81! A small 8-bit computer with a built-in membrane keyboard.

This was my first computer. I learned to write English and BASIC at the same time, on its little keyboard - so everything I've put out into the internet is its fault in some way. Happy birthday, little ZX81.

This is your semi-regular reminder that IBM’s “supercomputer” Deep Blue had a grand total of 30GB of RAM in 1997.

With that “strength” it could calculate 200 million chess positions per second, which placed it about 8-12 moves ahead of any Grand Master on the planet.

BUT…

Physicist and chemist Richard Chace Tolman was born #OTD in 1881. He showed that electricity in metal is the flow of electrons, developed relativistic applications of thermodynamics, and served as science advisor to General Leslie Groves during WWII. 🧪 ⚛️

Meet three scientists who said no to Epstein The warning signs included a web search, a mother’s doubts, and inklings of a “sexist attitude”

This is a nice contrast to all the awful behavior confirmed through the Epstein files. Proud of @jenlucpiquant.bsky.social & @seanmcarroll.bsky.social for picking up on the sexism & charlatanism right away.

Funny how the huge excitement about counting geometrical things using ideas from string theory is being described now:

"aside from a brief resurgence in the 1990s, enumerative geometry seemed to have been set aside for good."

Fact is, good hard problems never die.

Also when you pour off make sure to scrape anything off the sides of the jar during feeding. That’s typically where I’ve seen a mold issue.

Also thank you- I meant what I said to Dean in the context it was asked. Thanks for helping make that clear.
I wrote the proposal for a project and got the guys together to get it started. I emailed a presentation to Kevin one night and it stated the journey of a lifetime. I don’t want it to end.
