So, unless I am also missing something, I think you're correct even outside of Rust, but given how subtle it is I am also super sympathetic to this setting off someone's fight or flight reaction.
This seems very reliant on correctly specifying ordering such that in languages other than Rust it would be trivial to accidentally UAF without exclusivity requirements on decrementing.
So, I can imagine an order that looks like decr -> incr -> del -> deref in multithreading happening pretty easily
