Graham Platner boosts antisemitic conspiracy theorist online
The Maine Senate candidate quickly deleted his post, in which he approved of a message by neo-Nazi radio host Stew Peters
i should hope if you’re running for elected office, you & your social media team know who not to retweet, or at least know that not every voice saying something simple is one to support.
especially if you’re fighting to get distance from some really ugly skeletons in your closet.

Let’s be crystal clear by not canceling or moving classes and work remote in such a moment, Columbia is actively contributing to the current regime’s project of terrorizing our noncitizen community members.

Diskurs so präzise entgegen wirkt. V.a in West D scheint die Annahme zu sein, dass man Faschismus letztlich nicht v innen niederringen kann. Weil das die Erfahrung m dem NS war. Aber sind nicht d Referenzpunkte in d USA

And by wanting to understand, I mean, I want to understand why leftist commentators & even podcasters, who generally are v well informed & research stuff well, seem so bent on the “ICE = Gestapo”

The SA/brownshirts analogy is salient & terrifying. But also shows how on point the principled resistance has been & is. So what’s with the obsession of “ICE = Gestapo”? Is it bc to the USian left all Nazis are “Gestapo”? — No snark. Just want to understand

The FBI is much more likely, if we allow it, to be formed into this regime’s Gestapo. And historically has functioned not unlike the Gestapo (cf the persecution of the Black Panthers). — Also calls for more training of ICE, are calls for “turn the brownshirts into the SS.”

Fun fact: The majority of the cases the Gestapo “investigated” came from tips by the population. — But the Gestapo didn’t roam the streets to pick up, beat up, and kill people in the open. That was what the brownshirts, the SA did. Like ICE.

Yes there’s a parallel to “administrative warrants,” bc the Gestapo didn’t need to go the official court process — not that the courts would have made a difference, since the judiciary was fully captured quickly. The Gestapo fabricated evidence & tortured people in its prisons. But away from sight

But once the NSDAP got to power, they didn’t like how the Gestapo did intelligence gathering on political opponents. So the newly formed SD (Sicherheitsdienst, security service) got to do that & the Gestapo investigated & administered punishments, which could be fines up to executions

The Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei, secret state police) goes back to the Prussian state. It was formed in light of the 1848 revolution to covertly monitor political activities that might lead to the overthrow of the state. — OK, so maybe a parallel here because ICE was formed under GW Bush…

The SA were untrained thugs, which started as the NSDAP’s security service. Later members of other right wing paramilitaries joined the brownshirts, like ICE recruiting from right wing militias. Initially members even had to buy their own uniforms, like ICE ppl seem to bring their own gear

Can someone explain to me please why the USian left is so invested in “ICE = Gestapo”? — I agree we see fascism & no objection to the Nazi analogy. But ICE is the brownshirts (Sturmabteilung, SA) dispatching to cities to terrorize people. What’s the Gestapo obsession???

Whereas ICE reportedly has 22,000 officers, the NYPD has around 35,000. I have no hope for policing to get us out of this, but, just food for thought

Hey Jon Stewart, jokes about wearing masks aren't funny
Critics of the Daily Show host say he's a hypocrite.
Wrote about how disappointing it is that Jon Stewart punched down on people masking at @motherjones.com, when people should mind their own business and leave mask wearers be. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

I always frame citational practice as relational:
Whose ideas do I want to inherit and carry forward?
Whose/which ideas am I responsible to/for?
Which thinkers have offered me intellectual, emotional, spiritual guidance?
Who are my ontoepistemological ancestors?
