This means that the further a medical subject diverges from that norm, the less useful the tool will be, and in fact it may actively do harm by triggering a false negative or positive...

A predictive tool used in a medical context is only as good as the dataset that supports it... 9/12
- related to the point above, these tools are being used as part of a broader neo-liberal political project to cut public funding and concentrate it in the private sector. The managers and politicians outsourcing the job of screening for medical abnormalities to an algorithm... 8/12
...mental heuristics (easy, low cost) to avoid critical thinking (hard, high cost) - we get the same effect if we outsource cognitive work to an algorithm, our brain goes "sweet, no need for me to think about this anymore" and prunes the connections... 7/12
and it's even worse for trans research which is being actively deleted, in many cases with no chance of recovery, from US government servers.
- reliance on ML tools also reduces our ability to think critically - our brains are designed to minimise energy expenditure, and rely on... 6/12
...likely being useless for half the population.
- this is currently being compounded by one of the largest medical research systems in the world (the USA's) refusing to fund studies that are considered too "woke" (anything involving women, BIPoC people, queer people...etc.)... 5/12
...(too many variables, hormones fluctuate too much...) this creates a disincentive to study women and our bodies, and incentivises researchers to use male bodies as the "norm" - and we know this has lethal consequences for women. So there's already a massive issue with the training data... 4/12
- now this is an issue for anyone who is currently marginalised or under-studied, for example; women, women of colour and queer women. There is a prevailing issue with healthcare research in that women's bodies are considered too complicated to use as controls or as baselines... 3/12
- algorithms and predictive tools rely on large datasets for accuracy; but it's important to realise that at best they're working with probability - feed them enough data and they will give you the most likely (not the correct) token or result. 2/12
I constantly hear (partial) LLM apologism on the grounds that Machine Learning Algorithms are useful in a medical context, and every time I do, it makes me feel like my fur is being rubbed the wrong way.
