As heat, transport & industry electrify, demand for electricity will double by 2050, to meet this demand, networks will need to grow and be used in smarter ways.
This will be key for economic growth.
To do this, we have made recommendations around:
Today, at the #NIC we published the results of our study of electricity distribution networks.

Distribution networks deliver electricity to people's homes and most businesses.

It's LGBTQ+ history month. Myself, & other LGBTQ+ folk in STEM, work to improve inclusivity. But why is this needed?
The recent dismantling of inclusion initiatives, & the rise of anti-LGBTQ+ governments, it's important to reflect on why we do this π³οΈβπππ§΅

The image shows a series of six line graphs depicting the trends in global emissions of different pollutants from 1750 to 2022. The title reads "The world has passed 'peak pollution'," indicating that emissions of several pollutants have declined since their peak levels, except for ammonia. The pollutants shown are: - Sulphur dioxide (SOβ) β peaked in the mid-20th century and has since declined. - Nitrogen oxide (NOx) β followed a similar pattern, peaking around the late 20th century and then dropping. - Carbon monoxide (CO) β peaked mid-20th century and declined. - Black carbon (BC) β shows a rise until recently, followed by a drop. - Organic carbon (OC) β has risen steadily with a recent plateau. - Ammonia (NHβ) β continues to rise without a recent decline.
The world has probably passed βpeak air pollutionβ
Amazing, will give it a go, thank you!

*NEW* heat pump installs reached a new record in October, under the Government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme
3,800 applications received in October βΌοΈ
following a year of growth after the last Government upped the grant amount to Β£7,500
Want to βbuy π¬π§ Britishβ energy for for heating?
By 2030, w/ renewable roll outs, heat pumps will use:
π 55% LESS imported energy than today
π 1/6 the imported energy of a gas boiler

Today, thanks to BUUK, I got to visit a wonderful zero carbon heat network in Suffolk. It will supply a new build suburban housing estate with heat and instant hot water from an air source heat pump.
It even had a thermal store to help reduce electricity demand during peak hours.
Stacked bar chart comparing the annual electricity and gas bills of a typical household (Β£1,717 total). Electricity costs Β£884, made up of Β£319 wholesale costs, Β£212 network costs, Β£141 policy costs, Β£122 operating costs, Β£48 other costs, and Β£42 VAT. Gas costs Β£833, made up of Β£416 wholesale costs, Β£158 network costs, Β£46 policy costs, Β£125 operating costs, Β£48 other costs, and Β£40 VAT.
Energy bills are going to rise again in January.
But what are we actually paying for in an energy bill? My colleague @martinakavan.bsky.social has written this lovely explainer, with some neat charts

Great news! The government is going to remove the 1m planning application requirement for heat pumps.
This rule was putting people off getting a heat pump and makes it much easier for people in terraced houses to install one.
