Following the NEU's decision to actively recruit school support staff and withdraw from the agreement with us which they had signed in 2017, on Friday the NJC unions met with the TUC and expressed strong concerns, pressing the TUC to take action to reinforce the rules which govern inter-union relationships.
It is vital for the integrity of our movement that unions respect the rules of the TUC which all affiliates sign up to voluntarily. NJC unions will continue to focus on organising and winning for school support staff.

20 February 2026
Dear Chancellor,
I am writing to raise my concern over the current student loan system, particularly the impact of Plan 2 student loans on young graduates. I have received correspondence from a significant number of recent graduates who are being detrimentally affected by the repayment terms attached to these loans.
Graduates are already facing increased financial pressure due to the cost-of-living crisis. Many feel as though they are unable to save for a future including buying a home or having children. For those on Plan 2 student loans, their financial pressure is exacerbated by a system under which loan balances continue to grow despite consistent monthly repayments, often failing to keep pace with interest accrual.
Particularly concerning is the Governmentβs decision to freeze the Plan 2 repayment threshold for three years from April 2026, fixing it at Β£29,385. The National Union of Students has warned that this freeze risks leaving new graduates struggling to cover essential costs such as food, rent and bills. Many constituents also raised the concern that this is a retrospective change to the terms signed up to when taking out the loan.
Additionally of concern is the setting of interest rates with RPI, a measure the ONS has deemed as not fit for purpose. Under the system many young people in higher education have seen their loans balloon even before entering the workforce, and this continues to climb whilst making monthly repayments when in employment. Many experts including Nick Hillman, the architect of the student loan system, have called for switching to the standard CPI as is used for other Government policies.
Higher education remains one of the most powerful tools for improving a young personβs future prospects, and it is vital that we support those who pursue it. At present, however, many graduates feel let down by a system that they perceive as burdensome and financially punitive. To address these concerns, I urge you to coβ¦
I have written to the Chancellor to raise my concern on the current student loan system & I encourage the Govt to restore the repayment threshold so it rises in line with inflation.
It is not right that many graduates face soaring loan repayments despite meeting their consistent monthly repayments.
