I get a lot of questions these days about data from BLS and other agencies. Some of this is about fears of political interference. Some of it is about the reliability of the data, especially in light of recent big revisions. In a story today, I tried to tackle both.

Worst of the worst? Most US immigrants targeted for deportation in 2025 had no criminal charges, documents reveal
A Guardian analysis finds the vast majority of people who entered deportation proceedings for the first time from January to August last year had no criminal convictions
The findings come from little-known documents called I-213 forms, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed against the Department of Homeland Security, which are used in court to prove that a person is in the country illegally.

Wow, the Dem primary turnout among Hispanic voters in Texas is going to be giving the GOP sweats for the next 8 months.
Take Zapata County - turnout in the Dem primary there yesterday was 143% the total number of votes Harris won in the 2024 general election. That's wild.

No, the AP posts the data on their own dashboards, but if you want it at scale, or for specific races, you have to pay for access to their API. If Kalshi is going to use this data to resolve bets, they'd have to have access to the API

Kalshi bought an API key to AP data, basically. AP isn't doing anything except selling elections results to Kalshi, I think the headline is exaggerating a bit here

I don't think "teaming up" is how I'd phrase the fact that it looks like Kalshi just bought access to AP elections data. Seems pretty bog standard. AP is selling data to Kalshi, not partnering on something?

The War Crimes That the Military Buried
The largest known database of possible American war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan shows that the military-justice system rarely punishes perpetrators.

There are numerous flaws with the military justice system, but there are still laws that must be obeyed

βWe know this is just the tip of the iceberg,β said Michael Beckel @issueonereform.bsky.social. βWe might never get a full accounting of all the money that Trumpβs family and his companies have made from his time in the White House, and thatβs deeply troubling.β

Globe showing events at properties around the world
CREW - Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington - tracked all the events at properties around the globe. That gave me a fun opportunity to build out a globe bar chart.
The most were in Florida - obviously - but there were events across the world
