When you look at the price per kilo or per litre, everyday plant foods often come out cheaper than meat and dairy. Beans, lentils and plant milks can be some of the most budget-friendly items in the shop. 🌱

This has driven much of the increase in animal use and suffering, according to critics. The Irish Anti-Vivisection Society has strongly criticised the government and regulatory authority for allowing these numbers to rise and for what it describes as insufficient action to reduce animal suffering.

Over 19,000 of the experiments were classed as causing severe pain or suffering, a rise of more than 44 percent compared with two years ago.

A large number of these tests involve lethal poisoning of mice for botulinum toxin products (brands in Ireland include: Botox, Bocouture and Letybo). 💉🩸

The Irish Anti-Vivisection Society (IAVS) has shared new official figures that show that more than 112,000 animals were used in experiments in Ireland in 2024, an increase compared with 2023.

Most were mice, but guinea pigs, pigs, dogs, horses, goats and others were also used. 🐁🐖🐕🐎🐐🐾💔
