'Topple the government': Unions mobilize to battle the UCP but no general strike yet Common Front says it will organize a provincewide labour stoppage "if necessary."

In the wake of the provincial’s government’s use of the notwithstanding clause to bring an end to the Alberta teachers’ strike, the response from the labour movement is “not yet.”

We can roll our eyes at Rand’s worldview, entrepreneurs exalted, workers dismissed as “moochers” and “looters”. But it’s harder to take in the reality that Alberta’s Premier openly embraces this contempt for labour, right as teachers and other workers are fighting for fair treatment.

The US is woefully underprepared for wildfire season, say insiders: ‘The stakes are life and death’ ‘Efficiency’ cuts across offices have left teams understaffed, firefighters underpaid and uninsured, and without adequate equipment

Five federal firefighters, who spoke anonymously because they are barred from speaking publicly, were asked if their agencies were ready for fire season. The answer was a resounding “no”.

“If this turns out to be a major fire year, it’s going to be a shit show.”

Interesting piece. Started thinking about recent Finnish work suggesting a community resilience framework, which separates acute resilience (immediate response capacities) from basic resilience (e.g. more long-term adaptive capacity, social cohesion, and democratic stability). Curious of thoughts?

Dear Canadians: Ask yourselves what, and who, you value. This is apprehension, with medical experimentation, of and on your neighbours. It is no different from El Salvador, no different from a residential school. Justifying any erosion of human rights, for any group, is a slippery slope. Fight back.

Alberta to eliminate due process for people who use drugs The Alberta government is going full MAGA with its Compassionate Intervention Act, which will strip people who use drugs of due process and force them into months-long medical incarceration.

"Albertans looking to get their 'elbows up' against MAGA may identify the MAGA threat now in plain sight in their own province: armed seizure of people deemed undesirable by the state and their rendition into incarceration without due process."
