Why not an early morning thread using this data to explore the concept of "identity-protective cognition," and why understanding how it operates may be vital to understanding the role of misinformation in our digital age? This will get two likes, surely, but here goes...
"A plan backed by Donald Trump to restrict US states from regulating AI companies has provoked a backlash from prominent Republicans and Maga supporters, and accusations that he has caved to Big Tech donors."
In order for this wave of ai stuffed surveillance to gain a foothold, it must be seen as aspirational.
Dartmouthβs response to the Trump adminβs corrupt contract, short and sweet: βYou have often heard me say that higher education is not perfect and that we can do better. At the same time, we will never compromise our academic freedom and our ability to govern ourselves.β
This stuff is basically propaganda, and probably more dangerous than more obvious propaganda, because it performs the overcoming of objections to AI in a way educated readers are meant to find aspirationally sophisticated

If I were the owner of the @washingtonpost.com, I would not do a deal with the people who dismembered my columnist. Seems like a low bar, but Bezos managed to not clear yet another one. The world is awash in capital and that this is the choice should tell you all.
Heβs so poor, all he has is money.
Re-upping this blog post, because it took me freakin' ages to write.
What do we talk about when we talk about AI? Is it a field of technology or an extractive social process that makes a few people rich and powerful? And why is it so hard to define? www.careful.industries/blog/2025-4-...
Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Iowa. Wow, we see you π! Huge thanks to local law enforcement for helping keep everyone safe. With their support, four MAGA individuals have already been arrested for assault.
Data being extracted by DOGE staff could have included "sensitive information on unions, ongoing legal cases and corporate secrets β data that should almost never leave the National Labor Relations Board and that has nothing to do with making the government more efficient or cutting spending."
DOGE was never about savings. It was always about surveillance.
Over the weekend, we released new detailsβand now whistleblowers are coming forward too. Whatβs becoming clearer by the day: DOGE isnβt a government efficiency program. Itβs a data weapon aimed at the American people.

Undocumented immigrants paid an effective federal income tax rate of 5.27% in 2022.
That means they paid a higher effective tax rate than 5 of the richest Americansβ¦and a higher effective tax rate than 55 mega corporations.
So let me ask you: who are the real freeloaders?

This remains, and I say this advisedly, one of the best exchanges I have ever seen on social media
And then thereβs Weizenbaum on the false comforts of deploying technology in schools instead of addressing structural social inequities.
"A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday."

America's richest 10% now hold 60% of the nation's wealth.
The bottom half of America? It holds just 6%.
Wealth inequality is eating this country alive.
