So sorry to hear this. Take care, you and your family.
Civil rights are a kitchen-table issue.
We shouldn't be basing higher ed decisions solely on numbers like these because higher ed isn't a business, but we *definitely* shouldn't let people use 'run higher ed like a business' as a pitch and then bury the numbers that show they're killing profitable programs.
MAKE AN EMERGENCY DONATION to Trans Continental Pipeline right now.
They are a Colorado based org that helps trans people relocate there and they are overwhelmed with requests. CO borders KS, and TCP has the infrastructure to help get people out.
GO DONATE.

Thousands of institutions abandoned programs, ended or rewrote scholarships, closed down clubs and publications, all in pre-emptive compliance.
And you know why?
Mostly because they wanted to do it if they thought they could blame someone else for it.
it's weird to see people complain about Bad Bunny's performance being in Spanish when there have been entire operas in Italian, German and French performed in the US and the top song of the last two years, K-Pop Demon Hunters' "Golden" has lyrics in Korean

Mamdani: Thatβs how I felt when we came up with this plan. Together, we will expand the idea of what is possible in our cityβand what sounds and noises we can make at a press conference.
A new consultant contract at a Texas Educational Service Center would muzzle authors & harm students, barring them from inclusive experiences.
Y'all, this is REALLY BAD.

American Indian Movement (AIM) patrols have returned amid rising tensions in Minnesota with ICE. Nearly 100 volunteers are helping watch over elders and community members as federal agents outnumber local police and confrontations continue to draw protests and legal action.
This weird thing where people are like βICE is not the Gestapo, theyβre slave patrolsβ and then others are like βICE is not slave patrols, theyβre CPSβ and itβs like ok the guy in charge of ICE is dressing himself like a Nazi so yeah Gestapo but also fascists can learn from more than one thing!!!!!!
A screenshot of the Book Riot site titled THE BEST FANTASY BOOKS OF THE CENTURY SO FAR, showing the cover images of THE FIFTH SEASON and THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS beside their reviews. Text versions of the reviews are available at the Book Riot site linked.
Saw over the weekend that THE FIFTH SEASON and THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS were both listed among Book Riot's "Best Fantasy Books of the Century (so far)!" Very cool! bookriot.com/best-fantasy...

the people of MN have been murdered, brutalized and kidnapped for weeks now and have remained *amazingly* peaceful in the face of it. lecturing citizens to not βtake the baitβ etc is pretty disrespectful after a point and avoids the real question: how long are they supposed to take this, undefended?

i think iβm fully in on βthe white house is run by thirtysomething chuds who think grand strategy games are real lifeβ
One of the things that gets me about them people who are like βthey are ending the constitution to distract from the Epstein files, donβt fall for itβ is that nobody in power cares about little girls.
Oh, and -- Happy New Year, everyone. May it all be better.
I love that so many people pinged me on this. City Hall Station plays an integral role in the Great Cities duology for the same reason -- it's a beautifully-preserved homage to the city's resilience and hidden beauty. Great choice, @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social!

This is such an amazing review from @ruthjoffre.bsky.social at @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social! "The stories in We Will Rise Again offer readers a glimpse of not just how things are now but also how they could be. They present worlds where we solve problems collectively..."
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
(slow, deep breath)
Woosah. Okay, then. Moving on.
Absolute bullshit, and authors, if Harlequin has your foreign rights, you should also complain.
