Lots of companies are randomly placing AI into things in spite of it being harder and more expensive because of the perceived clout that comes with "using AI". It reminds me of companies making motions towards the term "blockchain" as if that did anything for them.
And, of course, "using AI" is such a nebulous concept bordering on a No True Scot argument. Here they definitely aren't using the-kind-of-AI-we-don't-like though.
Yes. It happens infrequently with visual artists getting mistakenly identified as genAI art (and happens a lot with college students getting accused of AI/plagiarism due to automated scans). This is the first time I've seen someone call out tech ad using AI when it isn't.
Then, as now, the value was not in improved service to the customer but in the ability to advertise that you were cutting edge.
We saw this same thing working with Watson on the Cognitoys Dino. IBM's publicity support was worth far more to us than the question answering service.
Companies have been doing this for longer than you might realize. More than a decade ago H&R Block advertised that they were using IBM Watson to help do people's taxes. Thing is, very *very* few people have taxes complicated enough to see any benefit from Watson.
I think this is the first time I've seen the AI hunt come for something in tech and miss.
Companies shove genAI in all over the place now in an attempt to seem high tech and part of the future to investors even when it adds little value to the customer.
