Fashions in Africa, and Africas in Fashion – Global Africa as Method “‘Africa’ can mean many things… there are thus multiple Africas, including regions, diverse politics and economies, and some 2,140 living languages” (Large 2021, 9). This article proposes Global Af...

My article “Fashions in Africa, and Africas in Fashion” is now out (OA) in #FashionTheory. What if we take #GlobalAfricaAsMethod seriously - not as a fixed region, culture or identity, but as a way to rethink fashion, value & creativity beyond Eurocentric frames?

On 6 Mar I’ll present Global Africa as Method at #GloTechLab. Drawing on ethnography across Nairobi, Maputo & Guangzhou, it rethinks African fashion in plurals and as a method for understanding creativity and value-making across China–Africa networks.

In "The cloak of creativity", Pei-Sze Chow and Claudio Celis Bueno critique the ways ‘creativity’ is harnessed to justify a sense of urgency around the adoption of artificial intelligence tools in creative work. Read it here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1...

Dr. Seyram Avle (UMass Amherst) delivered a compelling talk titled “Other Futures? Afro-Sino Entanglements in the Digital Age.” Drawing from her multi-sited ethnographic research across Africa, China, and the United States, she critically examined prevailing narratives that champion digital technologies as universal solutions for a better life. Dr. Avle challenged this optimism by highlighting the often-overlooked consequences of such technologies, including environmental degradation, excessive consumption, pervasive datafication, and a constrained imagination regarding alternative technological futures.

Complementing this perspective, Dr. Wei Wang (UvA) presented “Data Grabbing or Deep Datafication? Rethinking SHEIN’s Data Colonialism.” His talk delved into the inner workings of SHEIN, the China-based e-commerce giant and the world’s largest online-only fast fashion retailer. Through interviews with SHEIN employees and suppliers, Dr. Wang illuminated the complexities of platform capitalism. He shed light on the practical challenges faced by SHEIN’s data analysts during multi-level data processing, revealing the intricate dynamics and limitations of the company’s data-centric operations.
