Where things stand with the Department of War
A statement from Dario Amodei
I think one of the most staggering industry shifts in my 16 years as a tech reporter is that it’s not become a question of “should our product help the government kill and/or surveil people?” but “to what extent?”

✨New Perspective out w/ Wenning Deng and @fearbrain.bsky.social in @cp-iscience.bsky.social ! We argue that social foraging gives us a unifying, and ecologically grounded way to study how decisions unfold across levels — from individuals and dyads to collectives.

The era of Goog caring about doing the right thing at a leadership level is done, but glad to see Googlers realize what a precipice they're on. Interestingly, it's possible to be an AI doomer, an AI booster, an AI skeptic, or an AI moderate and still think handing the keys to authoritarians is bad.

Why is touch perceived as weaker during movement?
In our new preprint 📝, we examine tactile suppression during reaching.
Using optimal control theory, we show that tactile suppression reflects dynamic, uncertainty-dependent integration of forward model predictions and sensory feedback.

Amplifiers of Epistemic Posture
Essays and writing on AI
I'm a cognitive scientist with an interest in epistemic vigilance, and this essay that's been going around gave me pause.
I don't think it's straightforward to apply the concept of epistemic vigilance to interactions with LLMs, as this essay does.

Animal learning is painfully slow (at least initially). Yet, well trained animals can learn very fast, sometimes displaying few-shot inference. How does this transition occur?

Publicly wondering if your product might be conscious is good hype @anthropic.com, but poor science.
Consciousness attribution should integrate prior expectations with public/shareable facts, not by computational equivalence alone or anecdotes. If that makes us "vulgar behaviorists", we are proud.
