Gop Cave has served as a burial site since the Neolithic period. It feels sacred, safe, and powerful, a threshold between life and death, shaped by ritual and remembrance. It is a human place of love and memory. Neolithic sites remind us that all that separates us from the past is time.

In the 19th Century, Coalbrookdale was often described as βHell On Earthβ due to the impact of Industrialisation. Perhaps such conditions contributed to the tragedy below. All I know is that William Maybury deserves to be remembered.

In St Michaelβs Churchyard, Madeley, lie the six children of Rev. T. H. A. Gwyther. He was vicar in the 1850s. Of the six children, five were to die within nine short days of each other. Newspapers report him preaching to local children to help them navigate their grief. I hope it helped him too.π
Sometimes, the line between history and folklore blur, creating a story difficult to define. Other times, what we know in folklore hides something darker. This is the case with the tragedy of Polly Mayos.

In Hope Bowdler churchyard lies Francis Phillips (1657); his gravestone is one of the oldest in Shropshire. On the stone, it wishes for "an untroubled mold" which expresses his desire to lie in the grave undisturbed. It is an incredible piece of history and reminds us how special churchyards can be.
Yes please! That sounds perfect! I would love that!

Perched high above the nave in Stottesdon church is a carving of a woman who has sadly had much of her lower half destroyed. She is thought to be a Sheela Na Gig, damaged purposefully by someone who took offence to her. It's so wonderful that she endures despite being defaced.

Candlemas is a festival of light, halfway between winter and the spring equinox. On Candlemas Eve, Shropshire folk brought Snowdrops, or 'Christ's flower' indoors, to purify the home. Associated with Jesus, they removed negative energies protecting the domestic space.
