Map showing the number of times a location has burned in SoCal and which kind of fire it was: one burning under Santa Ana winds, or one that was a summer, fuel-driven fire without Santa Ana winds. Malibu area had burned at least 8 times from 1900-2017, and has burned twice now since. Image from Kolden and Abatzoglou (2018): https://www.mdpi.com/2571-6255/1/2/19

Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. 🧡

Fire seasons around the world are starting to overlap. This may leave Australia on its own Experts say Australia can no longer rely on northern hemisphere nations for water-bombing aircraft and firefighters during our summer.

During our Black Summer, more than 1,000 people came from North America to assist in firefighting efforts.

The overlap in fire seasons in both hemispheres has huge implications for how we fight fire.

Australia needs its own fleet of Large Air Tankers (LATs).

As climate change increases the risk of dry conditions and fire weather, fires across western NAm are bigger, more dangerous, and burning greater area.

It’s the difference between accidentally dropping a match into a pile of green, wet wood versus dropping it into a stack of bone dry kindling.

Also, for my remote sensing peeps who teach, Palisades Fire offering an excellent example of VIIRS saturating in the IR and bleeding over into downpath pixels. Neither the Pacific Ocean or central Santa Monica are actually on fire (right now anyway). #remotesensing #NASAcanyoufixthis

Santa Ana Wind (SAW) driven fires do occur in January but typically are not large and damaging. Figure below shows number of SAW fires for 1950-2020. These SAW fires are driven by wind speed and drought.
