Congrats, Jacob!! Happy to hear this.
My lab's been attacked by an anti-wind group and their lawyers. They threatened the science funding of my whole university, to shut me and my undergraduate research assistants up.
NYT just covered it. 1/n

Calling the Amazon Soy Moratorium a cartel. Wow, don't think even the Trump admin could've thought that one up. Tragic.

How do structures, management practices, and resources vary across public environmental organizations?
Why do these variables differ -- both within and between countries -- and what does this say about potential reform pathways?
After assembling the data, I hope to be able to achieve satisfying answers to questions like:
How do structural, managerial, and resource dynamics impact policy implementation in public environmental organizations?
My project will focus on collecting (some of) these data for the world's 30 most populous countries over a period of 20 years.
Public environmental agencies are critical tools in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Yet we lack the cross-national, longitudinal data on these organizations necessary to understand how we can structure and manage them so as to maximize performance.
I'm happy to share that I've been awarded €35,000 from the Leiden University Fund and Stichting Elise Mathilde Fonds for a project titled "A global analysis of the structure and impact of the environmental state".
chart showing canadian conservatives were WAY ahead in polling until they saw the damage from the tangerine tyrant was doing to the US
congrats to canada for seeing us as a cautionary tale and being all “not in my mf’ing house”
Re “woke” Harvard students:
- Nearly 1/2 of Harvard undergrads plan on careers in finance or consulting
- Just around 6% plan for jobs in government or non-profits
"Amid the news void, Canada Proud and dozens of other partisan pages are rising in popularity on Facebook and Instagram before the election. At the same time, cryptocurrency scams and ads that mimic legitimate news sources have proliferated on the platforms. "
Good job, Stanford admin. More of this.
“America’s univs are a source of great national strength, creating knowledge and driving innovation and economic growth,” they also wrote. “This strength has been built on government investment but not government control.“

There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy
Harvard & others must counter this quickly
The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value

This follows a 2024 Public Administration (@journalpa.bsky.social) article in which I unpack what optimal personnel allocation means for a decentralized public agency and study what this looks like in the context of deforestation control in Brazil.
I hope this research can be useful for those seeking to reduce deforestation in Brazil, and more broadly for scholars and practitioners interested in the effective design of public agencies.
Happy to see this piece out in Public Management Review! I examine the challenges Brazil’s protected areas agency has faced in allocating its workforce in a way that supports its key goal of preventing hashtag#deforestation.

This is an absolutely amazing research effort and intervention outcome.
Big congrats to all involved!

Me. I derive joy from Walz.
Teaching the political economy of the green transition this term, I used, and learned from, some amazing 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬. A 🧵 on some of the best. Further suggestions are very welcome, I'll add them below.
New Paper alert!
We propose a novel framework for organizing ex ante multi-criteria assessments of climate policy pathways at the science-policy interface, usable e.g. by formal advisory bodies such as @expertenratklima.bsky.social, @thecccuk.bsky.social ky.social and @airresources.bsky.social.

Exploit a crisis to recruit (expensive) hotshot academics from abroad at the same time you're cutting $1.2 billion from your own education sector. Cool 👍👍

My review of a new short book edited by Michael Lewis that profiles some of the nation’s outstanding and fascinating federal employees. As I wrote in the @washingtonpost.com review, “Perhaps never before has there been a book better timed or more urgent.” www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/who-is-gov...
The World Happiness Report is out, and Finland is indeed #1, followed by Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. If you rank countries by positive emotion, though, Senegal is #1 and Finland is #25. Again, this illustrates the difference between measures of life satisfaction and happiness.
It, unfortunately, will also silence international scholars (maybe even US citizens living abroad) who are leading authorities to comment on what Trump is doing to America. These conversations are happening in European academia.
Took more like 1 month but, yes, maybe some hope on the horizon:
