Granted, I'm in FL and the back of our house is south-facing, over a lake (yay albedo!) with no shade. I highly recommend maintaining some milkweed in planters that you can move inside to give caterpillars a safe haven. They can be affected by weather extremes. They also eat a shocking amount of foliage, and sometimes they even get competition from aphids or mites, so extra plants always help!
