What's one of your ultimate comfort movies?
I was under the impression it was functionally dead already
I presume that some spreadsheet somewhere says that it would be a big moneymaker, and spreadsheets way prefer existing properties to new ones.
My #LastFourWatched didn't have much turnover this week but I have plans to get to the movie theater this weekend so hopefully that'll change for next week. #LetterboxdFriday
Outside of Twin Peaks: The Return, I am hard pressed to think of a revival of a show I loved that has done anything other than make me tired. Sometimes things end, and I think we need to accept that. I don't need more Firefly, I want a new show that takes Firefly's good parts and runs with them.
Also, not for nothing, but I'm fucking sick of all these continuations. Did we love watching the X-Files undercut its imperfect but meaningful ending in favor of wringing a dozen more episodes out of it? Aren't we glad to see Scrubs hit the finish line and then invent a new hurdle to fall down at?
There were seven seasons of Buffy and five seasons of Angel, and honestly, I think mostly what they did by the end was drag down their batting average. We even saw this with Serenity, which is not a good movie and sucks a lot of air of out of the room of the original run of episodes.
Even outside of all the real world stuff that would affect this (Adam Baldwin went insane, Summer Glau has essentially retired, Ron Glass passed away, the whole Joss Whedon of it all), Firefly benefits largely from existing purely in potential, and I really don't think reviving it would be good.
This is a really fun conversation, and I'm really excited for people to get to hear it.
And of course the Spotify link for those of you who prefer to listen there.

Alrighty everyone, it's time for me, Justin and @cutiepuppyfire.bsky.social to get caught between the moon and New York City, as we talk about the 1981 romcom Arthur on the latest episode of the Biggest Night in Podcasting.

She does! And she's so relatable! I too would lose my mind over an autistic elf girl
I haven't played Magic really at all in over a decade but my favorite Planeswalker is, was and will continue to be my favorite dumb bisexual pyromancer, Chandra Nalaar
This is what's gonna get the northeast to secede.
The size of the scandal of what's being done to trans people in the UK is too big to even appreciate in one sitting and so many people just aren't even aware.
My blu-ray of DEBS arrived, and it's extremely funny to me that the cover art and blurb are still playing up the "Sexy spy parody" thing, like its a mediocre Cinemax production, instead of what it is (a light spy parody attached to an EXTREMELY sincere lesbian romcom)

This is one of the most insane examples of Imperial Core Brain I've ever seen. So many people are okay with the most hideous cruelty known to man if they benefit from it and don't have to see it. A million residents of Omelas asking us to shut up about the child.

Hey they had some culture relevancy like 3 years ago. We all remember that cover they did of We Didn't Start the Fire
Anyhoo, please check out my guest stint on @biggestnightpod.bsky.social, in which I join @elessar42.bsky.social and @thestopbutton.bsky.social for a fun discussion of the WW2 housing crisis, classic Hollywood romantic star power, and Hays Code skirting as featured in THE MORE THE MERRIER, here:๐

One of the most exhausting things about this endless moment in history is that I am forced to watch people I wouldn't trust to take care of a healthy dog for a weekend have been given insane amounts of power and are using it to giggle and high five each as they commit irredeemably evil acts.

Alright yeah, I like telling people about music I like
Been a while since I did a #LastFourWatched mostly cause I hadn't had a chance to watch any movies. But now I've had full turnover since the last one and honestly a pretty good couple weeks of movies.
God I'm so excited. I am unashamed to admit, I am ride or die for Jane Schoenbrun at this point, I will check out anything they do and this looks so good.
And to be clear, they're also only "Okay" with lesbian sex scenes if both women are conventionally attractive by male standards and its shot for the male gaze. No romance, no butches, no buff women, nothing like that.
They are, in essence, only okay with lesbians as a porn category.
Its a joke, yeah, but it does accidentally sum up how misogynist men are "Okay" with lesbians in media: They're okay with lesbian sex scenes, but anything about queer women's lives, interiority or, God forbid, that implies we won't be sexually available to men? Get that shit out of here.
