Did you know that Evolution Letters now publishes reviews?! Our inaugural one is fantastic! Deep learning is opening new doors for evolutionary genomics, especially for nonmodel organisms with sparse or uncertain genomic data. doi.org/10.1093/evle...

Researchers in the US might be having feelings about writing grants atm-I know I am!

We still need to write them. In this Evolution Exchange, I again chat with Sam Scheiner, who summarizes how to write a competitive proposal.

His advice is gold, and helpful regardless of funder. Pls RT!

Something I’ve learned - the best research environments aren't sterile. They're alive with creativity and warmth, with huge fish murals and dogs who have no idea what a p-value is but show up to lab meeting anyway. Science is a human endeavour and humans need to be inspired by their surroundings.

Led by my talented PhD student @justine-armg.bsky.social we’re running a #meta-analysis of #cross-sex-genetic-correlations in fitness components.

If you have unpublished data or know of studies that might not appear in a systematic search, please reach out, we’d love to include them!

Please share!

Do we actually know about the chromosomal sex in these samples? We know the PCR test, developed in other species, has results that are not 100% consistent with morphological sex, and there are several potentially interesting reasons why.

Writing and reading reviews helps me order all the disparate facts into a cohesive framework. And I think people would want to hear what you think - I know I would!

Yeah, it was from our cover article on stickleback parasites, not AI in writing. Thanks for the nod. And my $0.02 on reviews and opinions for whatever it is worth- they shouldn't be viewed as something in lieu of data papers, but an addition that enriches our understanding through synthesis.

Come to think of it, in my PhD dissertation, I meant to thank you for being such a conscientious mentor. But I didn’t notice the autocorrect to contentious until it was finalized. I’ve always meant to apologize to you for that typo and make a sincere thank you!

β€ͺIt is a matter of scale. AI slop is a comedy of errors and the hallucinations have no real basis in reality. Human errors are usually far more limited, and easily explained.

Public Service Announcement: Not all typos in scientific papers are LLM hallucinations. We are on alert about AI errors in the scientific record, but humans make mistakes as well. Maybe offer a bit of grace when you see one typo in a paper, and don't assume it is silicon- rather than carbon-based?

How relaxed preferences facilitate the evolution of novel animal signals Abstract. The evolution of novel animal signals is critical to the generation of biodiversity. Here, we explore how new sexual signals become established.

So excited to share our new work out in @evolletters.bsky.social today!
doi.org/10.1093/evle...

Sexual signals and preferences for them often differ across groups, contributing to reproductive isolation. But how do new signals evolve if females already have preferences for existing ones? (1/4)

Please help! We are looking for tissue-specific RNA-seq datasets or pubs with both male and female individual gene expression data, not pooled, from animal species. If you know of any relevant resources, please drop a link in the comments or send me a DM. Also, please help spread the word - thanks!
