This is a delightful post to cross my feed before I saw the context!

Huh, I wonder how people are meant to learn things then?

(Like, some people can learn stuff by fiddling around themselves, but teaching people that sodering exists and what it's used for and how to do it...isn't unreasonable? For an educational institution?)

And maybe they can't afford that for 12-year-olds!

But they need to do something differently, because I genuinely believed that, if I studied engineering, I'd be solely responsible for materials, equipment, etc., and it's only just occurring to me now (in my 40s!) that maybe it didn't work that way

Which always, 100% of the time, failed, because the construction paper wouldn't stay glued or whatever.

So I figured I'm bad at engineering.

That might have turned out differently if we'd been set up for success with proper materials and instruction on how to use them

The backstory to this question is that when I was a teen, it was fashionable to "encourage" girls into engineering by having us do "enrichment" activities, which usually constituted "bring materials from home (construction paper, toilet paper tubes, etc.) and make a rube goldberg machine out of it"

Has anyone here studied engineering in university?

Currently wondering: when engineering students are assigned to build something (like, an actual physical working thing) does the school provide tools and materials? Or are you responsible for sourcing it yourself?

I mean, the first most people heard of it was when he resigned. At which point the public's judgment is irrelevant

That is an excellent question, in the sense that it sets the historians up to provide an interesting answer!

All jokes aside, _did_ people expect the Spanish Inquisition? The short answer is: yes, quite a lot of people expected the Spanish Inquisition, and the Monty Python joke actually inverts historical reality satisfyingly once you know the background.

All jokes aside, DID people expect the Spanish Inquisition? Ummmbacon carefully details the historical context & how this popular Monty Python joke engages with the historical irony that the Spanish Inquisition was among the more anticipated institutional developments of its time!

Do they mean live theatre or movie theatre? Did I get to pick the show or did someone else?

What kind of museum is it? Do I have to visit the whole museum or can I leave when I get tired? What are its operating hours - do I have to set a morning alarm or can I go in the evening?

And because grandmothers are also part of the story:

Canadian grandmother married young with the expectation of a life as a housewife, then supported her family as a secretary when her husband abandoned her

Polish grandmother was a bookkeeper in Poland and a general factory labourer in Canada

I saw a picture of some juvenile wild dogs playing in a way that closely resembles what we would expect of juvenile domesticated dogs.

Unfortunately, what came out of my mouth was "Awww, they're just like human puppies!"

Ugh, I'm in the same boat. My Windows 10 meets my needs, I've been able to keep Copilot away (knock wood), but I fear that the hardware is going to physically wear out at some point. (That's how all my previous computers have died).

For those who, like me, are annoyed on principle at having to click through to learn what the animal is, it's the Vancouver Island Marmot.

(Still adorable pictures and good story though)

Broad claims about gender and behavior fall apart when studies include ethnically diverse samples Behavioral economics relies heavily on studies of Western, educated people. A recent analysis provides evidence that ignoring racial diversity within the United States has led to flawed generalization...

"The research suggests that generalizations about human behavior are often flawed because they rely on samples composed largely of White individuals."
