He talked a lot about Gary; he also showed some extended video of the two of them hanging out with Jackson Browne in his kitchen — all ribbing each other about how the package for JB’s first album came together (as it turns out, they pretty much winged it). Priceless stuff 🙏

Had a blast checking in with Henry Diltz — rock photog extraordinaire and ultra-colorful scholar of the Laurel Canyon scene. He’s worked with everyone from the Doors (he’s a co-founder of the Morrison Hotel gallery) to CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Eagles, James Taylor, Jackson Browne…just an incredible run.

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

THE OUTFIT (1973) is an underrated crime noir directed by John Flynn, with Robert Duvall and Joe Don Baker both playing the heavy in some badass scenes, including this closing sequence 🙏

Three Dog Night Sunlight
Three Dog Night Sunlight YouTube video by mark putt

A lot of tributes mention “Easy to Be Hard,” “One” and “Joy to the World” as some of Chuck’s signature highlights. I keep coming back to his take on Jesse Colin Young’s “Sunlight”. At first blush it’s all sentimentality and schmaltz, but he really nails the melancholy soul: youtu.be/lmi9rvB_DFk?...

Cory Wells was the lead on this one, but of course it’s still a 3DN classic. Nicely done 🙏🎶

I grew up listening to 3DN and reached out to Chuck Negron a few months ago when I heard a documentary was in the works. Very sad to hear we lost him on Feb 2.

If you don’t know the album, get your ears on Naturally (1970) — it’s just a stone-cold classic, soulful, gritty and raw.

Definitely an “American Prayer” feel to that one (thinking of Jim’s posthumous spoken word record w/the Doors). But keep your eye on Warren Ellis; he’s really the lynchpin now to the Bad Seeds & the perfect foil (and creative force) for Nick to lean on. The film One More Time with Feeling nails it.

Earl Caldwell with Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 3, 1968

Each year on MLK's birthday I feel compelled to think about him from a new angle. This year it's the journalist's perspective on his death and legacy, as told by Earl Caldwell, who was in Memphis on assignment from the New York Times on April 3 and 4, 1968. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/e...

David Bowie: Blackstar Part of the hoopla that surrounds the release of a new David Bowie album—which, up until 2013’s The Next Day hadn’t happened in 10 years—

Can’t believe it’s been ten years. We’ve been through the wringer since then, but his music still gives me the same lift it did when I was young. relix.com/reviews/deta...

I know it’s nearly impossible to set aside Steve Cropper’s unparalleled command of the electric guitar as a rhythm instrument, not to mention his towering contributions to modern soul music — but man he rolled with some pretty badass threads back in the day too 🙏 www.nytimes.com/2025/12/03/a...

“Billie and I met, and I said, ‘Look, our goal here would just be to shoot your show. I don’t want to impose myself as a director.’ In fact, I even offered her, ‘Why don’t we co-direct this? I’ll just show up with cameras and record it, essentially.’” — James Cameron, to Matthew Belloni for The Town

Caught a few shots of Jim Steranko and Larry Lieber in conversation at this weekend's @bigapplecomiccon.bsky.social

Between the two of them, they've seen over 100 years of hustle, hard work and triumph in the comics game. Absolute legends, and very nearly the last ones standing from a bygone era.

Mani was just the nicest guy, with a whip-cracking sense of humor. Interviewed him back in 2006 when Primal Scream released Riot City Blues and he had me in stitches for nearly an hour. Let the tribute parties begin…

I’ve been a committed Yoko fan since I first came across a pristine copy of Approximately Infinite Universe at Waterloo Records in Austin back in ‘96. She’s a genius, and John obviously knew it too.

I’d always meant to look for a collection of JQ’s Movieline hits but just never got around to it until I picked up Confessions of a Cineplex Heckler last year. Such a great book!

There’s most definitely an audience for a curated retrospective of your work on FFC. I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

Stellar review. I haven’t laughed like that since reading Joe Queenan back in his Movieline prime.
