It really runs with the premise of "the worlds unluckiest guy", it doesnt just run the expected gags but also visually shapes a world bending around this kids luck.

It's a grotesquely cartoonified world with no internal logic but doesnt use that to be lazy, to say "just draw some shit and give them the gist". Thinking within its absurdity, fast and loose logic and continuity, and uses it to create a bizarre and detail rich map of background gags crafting a mood

The amount of different shapes and noise that make up the impact mark, the perfect hole in his shoe and the perfect sock bouncing out of it, the patch implying a previous hole he fixed, the "ouch" label on his tongue, the patched together radio tower and huge washing line in the background.

"Calamity James" has these artistic qualities that I see everywhere but very rarely, and I always link it back to this comic that introduced me to the style at a young age. So much detail that is deeply unrealistic but shows thought nontheless? Realistic yet detailed?
