Iโm tired but needed to draw something. Inspired by Woody Guthrie.
Books don't tell readers who they personally are or who they are supposed to be. They do show readers a variety of characters. Implicit in that is this: "Here are some ways of being." Kids books aren't altering your kid to be someone new. They are simply showing them parts of humanity.
When I teaching the Holocaust I note the Holocaust museumโs definition of a concentration camp is a prison whose inmates are denied due process. These are by definition concentration camps.
Photo of a pear pieโthe edges of the crust are crimped and golden brown, the filling is made of chopped pears in a thickened sweet filling, topped with 4 heart shaped pieces of pastry.
Iโve never met anyone outside of my family that has had, let alone made, pear pie but it is one of our Thanksgiving staples, and even though we didnโt travel this year I still had to make one.
i don't want to have to second guess if every image is ai!! i don't want to edit with ai!! i don't wait to generate anything!!!! i don't want to talk to an ai chatbot!!! go away omg
cinema_nasties 1d Al defenders are so embarrassing j.paulmonter 2h All you are saying is that you want to gatekeep creativity. That's not good. drachelbarr & 20h โข โขโข Neuroscientist here... creativity is a process. A process. A FUCKING PROCESS. Not an output. Nobody is gatekeeping the process - Al simply invites you to skip to the end, to the output. Which, as mentioned, is not creativity. Nobody cares if the output is aesthetically pleasing, because the process, the act itself, the limitation of a single human mind and the resulting creations that capture that one single inimitable human experience... is what makes a creation worth paying attention
Well put by @drrachelbarr.bsky.social
A sheet of Us postal stamps based on the illustrations of Goodnight Moon.
I couldnโt resist.

My hold came through, time to finish this series.
The book HARK, A VAGRANT by Kate Beaton held up in front of a book shelf.
The book SEANCE TEA PARTY by Remina Yee held up in front of a bookshelf.
Reading a bit of both of these today. #whatiamreading

A hand holding a paperback book, the title is FINE a comic about gender, by Rhea Ewing. Behind the book are the photographers legs and feet, crossed at the ankle, to left are full bookshelves.
Gonna make some progress on this one tonight #whatiamreading
The top of the image shows this text: โThe artist is Trina Schart Hyman, an incredible and prolific talent who passed away in 2004. You can find a ton of tributes to her online from other illustrators and organizations, like the childrenโs literary magazine Cricket, which she helped create. She illustrated over 150 books, won the Caldecott Medal and Honors, and helped other artists land gigs for decades. She was also gay, hilarious, and one of the first white childrenโs book illustrators to include diverse characters.โ At the bottom is an illustrated image of an artist in a cluttered studio, desk covered and surrounded by books, mugs, plants, etc (and of course a cat.) The artist has short messy hair, is wearing a red sweater and gray jeans. She is looking out at the viewer as if briefly looking up from her work.
Me scrolling on tumblr: oh yeah that illustration is by Trina Schart Hyman, one of my favorite illustrators, letโs see what the post says about her, oh is that what she looked like I LOVE the hair cut, I should do a studio portrait like that WAIT HOW DID I NOT KNOW SHE WAS GAY
Cover of Johnny Appleseed by Paul Buhle and Noah Van Sciver, showing an ink drawing of a bearded man reclining on a forest floor reading a book. He is surrounded by trees, an open bag beside him has an apple peeking out.
Photo of the bottom half of a comic page. A bearded face says โFather Swedenborg says that his work is the third testament of the Bible, after the first and second testaments. In his work, the tortures described in Revelations will be ended and peace restored.โ
A comic page with two images. The first shows Johnny Appleseed reclining on the forest floor watching muskrats. The second shows him standing on a cliff watching a sunrise.

It was a fun experiment, Iโd love to see what you do if you give it a try!
An hand holding a packaged enamel pin depicting a pile of books surrounded by flames. On the spine of the books are the words โIโm with the banned.โ
I needed it.
Itโs Banned Books Week, and I donโt need you to buy my book as a solve for it (but buy it if you want to! Thatโs still extremely cool of you)โI need you to show up for your public libraries and your schools!
Photo of a patch of wildflowers, including black eyed Susans (yellow/orange petals with dark brown centers), blanket flowers (brown centers with petals starting pink in the center and orange on the ends) and calico asters (clusters of small lavender flowers with narrow petals).
Photos never do my wildflower patch justice, but I keep trying. I think Iโm gonna have to try painting them sometime soon, if it doesnโt get too cold too fast.
I mean, I feel like theyโre mostly mundane reasons, but theyโre reasons nonetheless ๐

I canโt share the newer stuff Iโve been working on for Reasons, so here are some old MG spot illustrationsโI love working in black and white. #kidlitartpostcard

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right nowโespecially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...
I see a lot of artists on here questioning whether they should be promoting their work in the current political climate.
The answer is always yes. ART: books, music, film, painting, sculpture - all of it - is the most accessible way to communicate complex topics, ideologies and emotions.
Itโs coming along nicely.
I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.
A t-shirt with an illustration from the book Miss Rumphius. In the foreground a woman is bending to look at blue, purple, and pink lupines surrounded by green grass. The background is pale green, showing hills and water with pine trees and a small building. Sitting on top of the shirt is a plastic container holding embroidery floss in colors that match the illustration.
I obviously needed more bookish apparel to personalize.
This is a mistake I see ALL THE TIME so if youโre drawing a spider web, listen up:
The photo shows the back of a pink hoodie stretched over a small table. Stamps resembling book spines line the bottom, one stack of books has a teacup on top. Above the row of books is a stamp of an open book with sparkles coming out of the pages.
I made my pink hoodie cooler. I just have to wait for it to dryโฆ (itโs oil based ink so it will take awhile.)
Yellow post it note on a brown surface with a wood texture. The message on the note reads โit takes the time that it takes.โ Signature at the bottom SarahLuAnnArt
This is the reminder I needed today.
"Goodnight nobody. Goodnight mush." ๐ฅฃ
Finished my embroidery project inspired by one of my all-time favorite picture book spreads.
