My album that I’m self releasing later this year (Bravest Neighbor) is themed around courage and community (in a very non-bumper sticker type of way, I swear) constructing this thing from the ground up has really boosted my own courage to awkwardly put myself into my community to make it better.
I grew up driving to Denton for weird events like this and in an age where everything is too expensive and requires an rsvp app (with a service fee) I’d like to inspire my locals to just organically make offbeat things happen. Invite me! I want to go. I want to live in this kind of city.
I’m trying to let everyone who wants be apart of this & remain true to my intentions about not overshadowing the original art. Invited all musicians who want to bring instruments and play the song. I really want this to be a community event and special one off memory like the 2001 yard sale.
Amazingly my videos summarizing all of this mess have gotten a good amount of views prompting collaboration with the original Pricemaster team, local businesses, university spirit team and even the city of Denton itself. It appears we have a big public party brewing. I’m getting many media requests.
the real momentum driver of this project is that the 25th Anniversary of the original event was rapidly approaching. A few artist friends and I decided we should make a goofy public gathering, play the song and pay tribute. Even though it’s a Tuesday evening in Feb and most people wouldn’t make it.
Mathew is also a collaborator with the Mountain Goats and engineered their latest album. I ask him to mix and master my song that has little nods to their song about Denton and combine Denton, TX pop-culture elements while still being its own thing (I hope!)
and yet, the idea of a musical tribute to the pricemaster has remained a sticky note idea on my wall for many years. It wasn’t until I saw my friend and frequent musical collaborator Matthew Barnhart in the background of the video at 2:14 that I felt I had a personal connection.
I’ve know about this since 2012 and have been reluctant about writing about this as it’s another group (the 2001 fasthouse) piece of performance art. I don’t want to take away or take credit or too much attention away from the original piece. I told all the living members this as I’ve met them.

The PriceMaster is a 2001 viral video of a cryptic yard sale host asking comically large amounts for bizarre items. It happened right down the street from me. I see it all the time and I follow the creative practice of writing about things outside my door.
