so we have 183, or 10110111, to turn this into hexadecimal you would split it in half first, so 1011 and 0111. 1011 is 8+2+1, which is 11. 11 is B in hexadecimal so the first half is B. 0111 is 4+2+1, or 7, so the second half would still be 7. so 183 in hexadecimal is B7!

that may not make sense why it stops at 15, but its because hexadecimal values are made using 4 bits, and 8+4+2+1 is 15! how it works is a hexadecimal value will separate the byte into halves, and treat both halves as an 8-4-2-1 value.

Now lets talk about Hexadecimal values! hexadecimal values are 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F. A through F is just a way to write 10-15 using a single symbol to represent it.

to calculate 183 you need to do math using the given numbers in the byte, so it would be 128+32+16+4+2+1, and that would be represented as 10110111 in binary!

this effectively means that bytes can be represented as 128-64-32-16-8-4-2-1, for any of those values to matter, they need to be represented with a 1, for them to be ignored, they need a 0. now lets start with a random number, lets try 183!

binary is written as a byte typically, a byte is a string of 8 bits, and a bit is just a 1 or a 0. the value for each bit is calculated by powers of 2, with 2^7 being the leftmost bit and 2^0 being the rightmost bit.
