Language is not a tool for me, but a medium infinitely larger than my intention. What will find resonance is out of my hands. If the poem works… it will set off vibrations in the reader, an experience with language—with the way it defines us as human beings.
—Rosmarie Waldrop, “Thinking of Follows”
“[…] if the body had been easier to understand, nobody would have thought that we had a mind.”
— Richard Rorty, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature
“But from time to time. From time to time. What tenderness in these little words, what savagery.”
(Beckett, Molloy)
“The reverse of melancholy is always irony.”
— W. G. Sebald (interview, 1998)
… and [she] is now part of the drift called “the infinite.”
I cannot tell how Eternity seems.
It sweeps around me like a sea…
— Emily Dickinson (letter, 1882)
Just came to mind:
“Passion means to forget oneself. But you do things in order to enrich yourselves. C’est ça. You haven’t the least notion how repulsively egoistic that is of you…”
— Clavdia to Hans Castorp (The Magic Mountain)
El infiero era no dejar de escuchar el viento en cualquier punto del país. No puedes huir de él.
Rhyme is the public truth of language, sound paced out in the shared places, the echoes are no-one’s private property or achievement; thus any grace (truly achieved) of sound is political, part of the world of motion and place in which language is like weather, the air we breathe.
J.H. Prynne, 1968
“The word has meaning only if it rids us of the object it names; it must spare us its presence or ‘concrete reminder.’ In authentic language, speech has a function that is not only representative but also destructive.”
— Blanchot, “The Myth of Mallarmé” (tr. Charlotte Mandell)
“Listen, because I dived into the abyss I started to love the abyss of which I am made.”
— Clarice Lispector, The Passion According to G.H.
“In addressing these lines to you, I rediscover all the anguished hope that presides over my rare encounters with Poetry.”
— Celan to Char (July 21, 1954)
“You are among the very rare poets whom I wished to meet.”
— Char to Celan (July 23, 1954)
☕️ Sunday morning, with letters:
“. . . Again is the sacred
word, the profane sequence suddenly graced, by
coming back.”
— J. H. Prynne
(from “Thoughts on the Esterházy Court Uniform”)
Don DeLillo, End Zone:
“Most lives are guided by clichés. They have a soothing effect on the mind and they express the kind of widely accepted sentiment that, when peeled back, is seen to be a denial of silence. Their menace is hidden with the darker crimes of thought and language. (1/2)
“But will I be able to carry into another world what I forgot to dream?”
— Fernando Pessoa, writing as Álvaro de Campos
(trans. Costa and Ferrari)
“It is not through form [Gestalt] but rather through transformation that creatures can offer themselves inexhaustibly to poetry from this source.”
— Walter Benjamin
from an essay recently translated for the first time (shared by Winter Pallaksch):
