Thx. I agree, trust-mistrust is dynamic, not static. As for Trump, I don't think he trusts Europe at all, and his action clearly undermine trust (Article 5, threats towards allies). I would argue we're well into a dawnward spiral...
‼️Mistrust in US security guarantees is nothing new. But it’s telling how careful and considerate American decision-makers during the Cold War era tried to balance national interests and allied concerns. Rebuilding trust is possible, but it will take time and effort…
💼In early 1963, mistrust towards the US was mounting, straining transatlantic relations. Yet, JFK was able to restore faith in US security guarantees using range of measures, including his symbolic reassurance (“Ich bin ein Berliner”🍩), but also by augmenting multilateral consultations within NATO.
💡I propose a novel framework to trace trust-interactions within security communities & argue that actors may successfully manage intra-alliance crises by employing symbolic, discursive and institutional policies, i.e. taking a leap-of-faith. This contrasts to traditional power-based perspectives.

🇺🇸 throwing Ukraine under the bus. This shows how pointless 🇪🇺’s bootlicking of Trump was. West should have supported Ukraine more decisively (also Biden & Scholz to blame here). Europe still can and must, its security is on the line, too. But this will have a steep price now (at least economically).

Das Ganze ist zwar ohnehin eine Geisterdebatte, weil die Stationierung von Friedenstruppen derzeit völlig unrealistisch ist. Aber dass Deutschland mit 2x~5000 Soldaten (in Litauen und dann Ukraine) überfordert wäre, sagt einiges über den Zustand der Bundeswehr.
