that's what got me into wrestling in the first place—I was just so curious about why people liked it because I didn't see the appeal, and as a person who was in a ballet company for a good chunk of my teen years, it ended up somehow resonating. good on you for being curious! ♥

and, of course, to finish out one of the reasons i love it so much:
i went to wrestlemania in person last year and am going again this year, and it was truly one of the most polite, welcoming, and inclusive events i've ever attended. i have several friends that are pro-wrestlers in lower leagues, most of whom are queer and/or trans. it's not how it used to be.
much of the hate is really classist/sexist, that only unwashed maga dudes love pro-wrestling. actually attend an event, and you'll see a true rainbow coalition of people from all demographics coming together to lose themselves in pure catharsis of watching somebody hit somebody else with a chair.
there's a lot of hate for pro-wrestling in the replies, which is a bummer. it's an incredible performance. i never thought i'd like it, but after getting into it during covid, i've never looked back. thinking of it as "fake" is missing the point; these are real athletes, real stunts. it's theatrics.
i was never into wrestling until a few years ago when i watched wrestlemania on a whim. i was completely hooked. the pageantry, the athleticism, the bombastic plots, etc. there's nothing like it. to a lot of haters, i compare it to cirque de soleil. it doesn't have to be "real" to be compelling.
I think pro-wrestling is and always will be its own thing: a beautiful mixture of theater and cosplay, of athleticism and story-telling. I'm not sure the model will ever work anywhere else.
absolutely right. I think promoting women wrestlers has really helped it reach a new fanbase (the amount of gays and women who got converted into fans bc of rhea ripley is astronomical). it's sad there's hate, bc pro-wrestling is one of the greatest fan communities, from lower leagues to wwe.
a lot of people have questioned my love of pro-wrestling, the "fake" aspect coming up a lot. but it's not fake! when I pitch it to people as similar to cirque de soleil but violent, they start to get it. it's about the acrobatics and the story, not about the competitive outcome. it's a real sport.
This is not the operative point here, but as someone who has trained to be a pro wrestler and literally worked shows with men and women who are in major promotions.
Do not call pro wrestling fake.
Pre-determined outcomes? Sure.
But everything in that ring hurts, and "fake" is deeply disrespectful
