With this project, @mtippett.bsky.social and I wanted to capture and expand OBUMβs strange world. The 13 works offered by @ExpandedArt curated by @postanika as part of Reimagine Tomorrow (1954-2024) mark the launch of this world-building project.
What makes OBUM unique for us as artists is how it almost felt discovered, not created. Even the name "OBUM" appeared spontaneously during the creative process, as if the project named itself.
As post-photographic AI art, OBUMβs images are derived from human-made datasets, so the works are in some way products of our collective unconscious that reflect our culture's preoccupations with power, sexuality, and consumerism.
The project features solitary women juxtaposed with bizarre machines or vehicles. These images feel familiar yet unsettling, like glimpsing an alternate reality.
