I was really excited to hear that you had the second edition though because I started learning with the third edition which was for sale in ordinary bookstores as late as 1997. People are still using the PDF of the third edition today.

I suspect the book is called Teach Yourself Esperanto. I doubt it has any collector value, so the actual printing year probably doesn't matter. I accidentally just downloaded a PDF of the third edition.

So now I can go read the forward while I'm thinking of it. See above

I don't suppose he made a huge number of changes, but if somebody was interested in learning Esperanto they should probably use the third edition or a more modern book.

Calling back to your message up a little, I actually do speak Esperanto fluently. I'm American, living in the US, native English speaker. I speak decent German and a little bit more of several other languages, including Dutch. My Dutch is mostly passive, probably A2 or B1 reading at best.

I did not expect such an interesting reply. I think what I said about modern books being better to learn from us probably still true.

Neat!! I learned from the third edition. It's been a very long time since I've read through the preface, but I recall the third edition was highly edited and updated, all by a third author. I've never seen the 2nd edition.

There are PDFs of the third edition floating around online.

What's the title? I have a few Esperanto books that were found in grandparents attics. They tend to have more value as curiosities than to actually learn about Esperanto. There are much better materials available today.

The story about ISN in Nicaragua is also interesting. Throw a bunch of deaf kids together and suddenly there's a new language in the world that nobody invented.

Have you read about the history of American sign language? When the first Deaf schools were established in the US, the teachers were trained by French schools, so ASL is more like French sign language than like British sign language.

In fact, signed languages are more likely to vary from region to region than spoken languages are because we have not had a hundred years of Deaf radio, Deaf telephone, or sign language newspaper to help unify the language across a region.

To answer the "why" question above, the reason all sign languages are different is basically the same as the reason that all spoken languages are different. Sign language is not an invention introduced new to every generation. It's also not based on a spoken language. It is its own thing.

One of the best reasons to learn any language is for the inter-human connection that it allows. In that regard Esperanto has been the most needed language I know.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by needing a translator for Esperanto. Are you talking about a human translator/interpreter, or something like Google translate?

Because both are needed.

Don't worry about nobody learning with you. The whole point of Esperanto is you learn the language, use it to talk to strangers, and then become friends with them.

This comes up on Blue sky all the time. Clearly Esperanto and the other languages are listed in some web browser template somewhere, possibly based on ISO codes.

If you need somebody who speaks Esperanto, you can go to the practice where my wife works. I don't think she does very well with Egyptian

I don't understand.
First, Esperanto absolutely is a real language.
Second, other languages do this as well.

It's a little strange to me see what people consider brutal. It just looks like normal Esperanto to me.

The only search results for "Pensilvanio" (#Esperanto for Pennsylvania) on BlueSky are from me.

Come speak Esperanto with us this October. Esperanto immersion weekend in PA.

It's funny you should mention Esperanto and Cleveland in the same post. For a second I thought this was about the American Esperanto national convention. My coincidence it is in Cleveland this year.
