James Islington. It's YA and the MC can be a bit of a Gary Stu at times, but the world and magic were interesting, and the romance was sweet - it's a minor subplot, tho. I really liked it :)
I just finished The Will of the Many and it was pretty good - it's fantasy but has a sci-fi feel, and the romance in it is a subplot
Take a chunky textbook with you, super casually make it visible and pretend you're writing a thesis. Small tent is also a viable option.
