2/2/ It's a newsletter mainly for journalists and newsroom leaders. Those English are well-known in Germany. It would sound weird to use German words that nobody in the industry actually uses. I fact, my translation tool DeepL often translates too much and then I have to translate those words back.
Hi David, thanks for taking the trouble to read my newsletter in German if that's not your native language. There is also an English mirror edition (but the Substack mobile app doesn not display it): newsmachines.substack.com/s/english About my use of English terms in the German version: 1/2
2/2/ It's maddening that on the Substack mobile app I can choose to only display the German but the English version or vice versa but not both. As if I was the first ever to publish in two languages. Let's stay in touch!
Hi Emma, I should have tagged you here, but I forgot. πJust want to mention how much I value I got out of your presentation at @hackshackers.com Baltimore. By the way: My newsletter is bilingual. Since early April I have published English /German mirror editions. newsmachines.substack.com/s/english
The Wall Street Journal recently dared to do something that no major national newspaper in the USA has dared to do before. An AI-generated report on the homepage. Read all about this carefully planned endeavor and the strategy on my newsletter News Machines: newsmachines.substack.com/p/how-lars-t...
A new AI-powered content tagging system. Tests with 1,400 Orioles baseball team reports, 6 LLMs and 8 prompt iterations. Value: Learn, which content leads to subscription conversions. Cost: $50. See the whole Baltimore Banner case study at News Machines: newsmachines.substack.com/p/baltimore-...
How does Village Media build local news villages in Canada and now also in the U.S.? I'm exploring their back to roots concept, powered with AI, in my new newsletter: newsmachines.substack.com/p/village-me... (English version) , newsmachines.substack.com/p/village-me... (German version)
Good catch!
Law firm Paul Weiss thought it could buy itself into Trump's grace for the price $40 mill. What it reaped instead is a shitstorm that will cost it far more. Not only because of Rachel Cohen. But also because Trump turned this bad deal into an even worse PR disaster, says @dankennedy.net
I hope youβre right @simonowens.bsky.social but I believe before that happens, a lot more people will have to experience deep pain themselves, because they clearly donβt care whatβs happening to others.

There have been many low points in only 5 weeks of Trump administration, but this is a turning point from which the U.S. cannot easily recover, even if the next president is a Democrat and the next congress is dominated by Democrats. The whole world is shocked. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
It might not have been the @washingtonpost.com βs first choice to let @davejorgenson.bsky.social post on his own channel, but I think he has all the leverage here. He already has enough followers to be a brand on his own.
At least he chose a suitable background color for his message to the world. Democracy dies in darkness and so does the @washingtonpost.com .
You chose the background color for your announcement well, Jeff Bezos. Democracy dies in darkness. And so does a once proud and great newspaper. This should be the last nail in the coffin.

This NYT analysis is spot on. No more trying to save Republicans from themselves and then letting them take the credit. They can't govern, so let them try in vain. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/o...
That is good news and correlates with my own observations of Bluesky vs Threads. Tried both, now concentrating on Bluesky. Forced algorithms in the news feed are poison for meaningful engagement. Let users choose between algorithmic/chronological. And devaluing links like Threads does is the worst.
I finally got what's bugged me about all these stories on the crippling of the US govt: all of them speak of "cuts" when, in fact, only Congress can 'cut' funding, and it has done nothing of the sort. The story describes illegal & unconstitutional impoundment, BUT SAYS NOT ONE WORD ABOUT IT

Next step for covering Trump: Replace the words "radical change" with "illegal coup".
