Well thank you so much! I appreciate knowing my descriptions aren't for naught.
Thank you so much! I feel watercolour is really underrated in terms of its flexibility and potential to render colours as vibrant and saturated as any other medium, in addition to delicate washes. It is a powerhouse medium!
Oh yes, cross that off the list (or just leave it there to inspire a return trip!) Summer or winter?
Thank you Jeffrey, it was a wonderful experience that needed to be expressed in paint!
Thank you K!
Watercolour painting by Canadian artist, Jennifer Annesley, of a lit antique oil lamp lighting a log interior, next to a glass of white wine. In the background is a square 4-paned window looking out to a vista of a snow- covered mountain and deciduous trees. Colours range from firey yellow-orange & burnt sienna to cool blue and purple. Value range is complete, from pure white to pure black. Available at Canada House Gallery in Banff, Canada https://annesley.ca/availablechg
"Skoki Afternoon"(watercolour, 21 x 14") The entirely analog experience at Skoki Lodge is rustic, yes, but elegant & restorative in its simplicity. Antique oil lamps are the only light source in the 1930 ski-in lodge, creating a glowing interior that contrasts/augments the winter landscape. #art π¨π¦
Watercolour painting of Yamnuska Mountain on the edge of Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. A cliff face catches afternoon light with low clouds rolling through the valley at its base and more peaks in the background. A fringe of trees frames the bottom of the composition. Colours range from golds and rusty orange in the rock, to the pale pink of snow and violet shadows.
Fresh off the easel...one of two new watercolours heading to Canada House Gallery in Banff, Canada on Thursday.
"Yamnuska" (50 x 30" framed) The iconic peak guards the eastern side of Banff National Park, and is popular with climbers w/ around 200 routes. I love the way it catches light... #art
Thank you - watercolour as a medium has amazing range!
watercolour still life painting of red and gold tea cup and saucer, gold spoon, antique dressmaking book, antique warpack needles, and the edge of a corset. A needle with thread winds behind the cup, visually connecting the objects, strong afternoon light illuminates the scene.
"Needles and Threads" (12 x 12", Watercolour) Another painting that just arrived at White Rock Gallery, B.C. A literal thread connects past & present: my grandmother's antique needles/dressmaking instructions, my mom's tea cup & a corset I made recently. annesley.ca/available-at-white-rock-gallery
Noooooo!!!! Paint on π₯°
Exactly right Krista! Keep painting and enjoying! Revel in the mistakes as they are stepping stones on the trail to better work.
Thank you! Ooooh, Barcelona is an exceptionally beautiful city β€οΈ
Krista - thank you so much for your generous comment. I'm off to hang out on cloud nine now.π
Yes it is insane amounts of work, and I love every minute of it.!
Watercolour painting of cherries in a silver sugar bowl, spilling out onto an antique silver tray. A garden is can just be seen reflected in the silver bowl, and subtle shades of sky blue are reflected in tray suggesting an outdoor setting.
"Valentines" (12 x 12" watercolour) just arrived at Whiterock Gallery, B.C. The type cherries are actually named "Valentine," part of Romance series developed for our cold π¨π¦ climate at the University of Saskatchewan. They are little flavour bombs in the juiciest shades of red. #canadianart
Fresh watercolours 12x12β one features our Valentine cherries from the garden, the other a vintage tea cup with my grandmotherβs antique wartime needle packs and a corset in progress. A few of my favourite things. #canadianartist #originalart #humanmade
Thank you Peter, much appreciated!
Thank you!
Watercolour still life painting by Jennifer Annesley. Objects include antique sheet music of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", a crystal brandy snifter and ornate silver glasses sitting. Natural light sweeps through the objects creating sinuous shadows.
"Arpeggio" (Watercolour, 16 x 20") my first painting of 2026 is on its way to White Rock Gallery, White Rock, B.C. arriving tomorrow. annesley.ca/available-at... #art #canadianartist #music
...headed there soon & can't wait to say hello to this sublime creek. Hoping for some open water & interesting light - it is so different each year & certainly not a given, though pure joy is! Hope this inspires & brings respite for a sec.

π¨π¦ For those who need a timeline cleanse (a.k.a. everyone) these are a few of the paintings I have made over the years inspired by one of my favourite spots in the Canadian Rockies that we ski tour up to annually for the past 30+ years... 1/2
A photograph of a gingerbread cookie (a ballet dancer, a play on Swan Lake) in an arabesque position in powder snow by a creek with the words "wishing you and yours joy and wonder." I make gingerbread each year and call them "The December People," taking them with us on our skiing/climbing adventures, and then photograph them in situ. Each one is a kind of cookie avatar, a reflection of what we're up to in the back country.

"Swan Lake" π Not a painting this time, but another medium I like to work in...Gingerbread! (@thedecemberpeople on IG)
Wishing you the best of the season, and may light and beauty never be far from your hearts.

square watercolour painting of a tree covered lake shore reflected in calm water. The sun sets behind trees shining gold and crimson though a tangle of branches, landing on summer grasses and reeds at the water's edge.

I appreciate that Peter, it is indeed a magical place!
Belgium's irresistible city of Brugge (Bruges) has a rich history of trade and an affluent merchant class who built lavish houses on a maze of canals and cobblestone streets; a medieval labyrinth in which to wander and wonder. One is lured down endless passageways by the enchantment of light, conversations, music and aromas spilling from restaurants, cocktail bars, lobbies. Late at night, there is a moment when most reasonable people have gone home and businesses are preparing to close but lights are still on, revealing elegant & inviting interiors. Another passageway invites the wanderer to keep discovering new processions of ancient houses, another canal, another square, maybe another cafΓ© open for a nightcap. Warm amber light and red brick contrasts with midnight blue sky and deep shadows, cafΓ© chairs cast serpentine shadows on table tops after a fleeting rain shower.

Still life painting of a black, red and gold Venetian mask placed on antique sheet music of a Chopin Waltz. Light shines through the mask and casts a portrait in shadow onto the creamy aged paper, a black satin ribbon curves through the foreground, a hint of burgundy brocade in the background adds richness and depth.

"Evening Waltz" Watercolour 10.5 x 7"
(sold, private collection)
Watercolour painting of a row of 5 story houses on a canal in Amsterdam at night. Bicycles are parked for the night canal side, the lights of the houses are reflected in gently undulating water, a tree softens the geometry of repeating windows and doors. A hint of midnight sky can be seen in the top of the composition. Colours are predominantly yellow, oragne, ultramarine blue and pure black.

Vertical still life painting of a red wine glass and glass oil lamp inside the historic ski-in Skoki Lodge in the Canadian Rockies. Afternoon light illuminates the log interior through a vintage mullioned window, a framed topo map adorns the wall in the background, a #burrowingowl wind bottle sneaks in from the left. Colours are firelight - warm golds, reds, burnt sienna, contrasting with cool pale blue/green of snow-covered trees seen outside the window. The lamp flame warms the objects and spreads warm light over the wood plank table.
