ppl who still commission their favourite artists even in this era where everyone is broke and genAI is being pushed on us at every opportunityβyou are appreciated more than words can express!!!
However, many folks do need to attend the larger conventions, and the big'uns do have many good aspects. In any case, just reason 5 billion to treat artist alley folks with kindness, show them some love, don't ask for discounts/free stuff, and tip generously! (y'all have tipping turned on, right?)
This is super rough! Help out a fab artist (if you can)!
If anyone is wondering why I'm doing tiny local cons this year rather than large ones (large one kept my fees last year when I couldn't attend cuz of broken bones), this is why. Also, tiny ones are so much nicer on all fronts and for me, at least, 1 day = same/+ $ (after all this is accounted for).
Itβs likely the artist behind that ECCC table paid at least
$450 for the table
$500-700 for lodging
$150 (+) for food/drink
$300+ for merch.
The financial risk is real! Be nice to the creators behind the table and even if you donβt got the $$ to spare, a kind word goes a long way.
If you're wondering why I only exhibit at AZCAF, which is down the street from my house and only costs fifty bucks, this is why. Large comic conventions are absurdly expensive to table at. I can't even exhibit at Phoenix, five minutes from my house, because Artist's Alley costs $600 dollars.
