Serapias carica tongue-orchid with a patient Laphria aurea robberfly resting upon it, Orchids of Rhodes © Jon Dunn
Inspired by my orchid tour co-leader @thenewgalaxy.bsky.social's fabulous orchid / insect predator image this morning, here's another for my countdown to #OrchidsOfRhodes - a robberfly waiting for an unwary bee to visit this Serapias carica tongue-orchid. What a beautiful way to go...

I see Farage is off to Mar-a-Lago to talk down Britain and suck up to Trump.
There's nothing patriotic about cheering on a foreign leader whose illegal war is sending British families’ energy bills through the roof.

Almost nobody in the media reported on the former Tory Government's sweeping power grab of the electoral commission. This week Labour have announced that they will reverse what Boris Johnson did and return the commission to independence.
Ofcourse Labour will get absolutely no credit for doing this

As days become longer and warmer our urban flora is beginning to gather steam. Here’s Common Whitlowgrass (Erophila verna) growing - as it so often does - on a bed of moss on a pavement #UrbanPlants

Wild lettuce greens (Claytonia perfoliata) in a blue basket.
My hiking buddy introduced me to Miner's lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) aka California lettuce not long ago and today I found it in abundance. What I foraged today made for a tasty dinner salad. The ancestors would be proud.

A selection of some Ophrys reinholdii forms found over the years in Rhodes © Jon Dunn
One of my favourite of all European orchids today in my countdown to the incomparable @mariposanature.bsky.social #OrchidsOfRhodes tour - Ophrys reinholdii. I love everything about them - not least their contrasting colours and variability. They work on a visceral level.

The Choco Toucan are native to Latin America.
They play a vital role in the rainforest by dispersing seeds.

Close-up photographs of a naturally green harvestman (Algidia viridata ssp. bicolor) with a bumpy, textured body that resembles moss or algae. The arachnid's long spiny legs and bumpy body are shown from multiple angles against a blurred green background.

Never miss a chance to get face-to-face with a harvestman.
This is the stunning subspecies Algidia viridata ssp. bicolor, endemic to New Zealand!

Ophrys cretica ssp. beloniae, Orchids of Rhodes © Jon Dunn
Today's dose of orchid #bloomscrolling in my #CountdownToRhodes features the beloniae subspecies of Ophrys cretica, a strikingly-marked bee orchid with the impact of a punch and the colours of a bruise. It's a knockout example of the spectacular @mariposanature.bsky.social #OrchidsOfRhodes.

King Ferdinand's Orchid (Ophrys regis-ferdinandii), Orchids of Rhodes © Jon Dunn
Today seems like the day to share an ugly royal in my #CountdownToRhodes - King Ferdinand's Orchid is, with the best will in the world, not the most attractive of Ophrys bee #orchids. Still, apart from spawning the occasional hybrid, it's not implicated in any serious wrongdoing...
