Ta da! It's cover reveal day for my new book, THE FLESH KING, the sequel to THE PALE HOUSE DEVIL. It will be out in October. I hope you enjoy it.
If you made a list of things that could be done to make Battletech better as a game and setting, "make it more like 40K" wouldn't be at the bottom of it. It would be on another sheet of paper in a garbage can down the block, covered in old coffee and pizza grease. BT Gothic looks like a bad joke.
Political cartoon. Rep Al Green, D-Texas standing up and pointing his cane yelling "HE DOES NOT HAVE A MANDATE TO CUT MEDICAID!" In the lower corner are two people hiding behind round signs. One reads "Civility!" and the other says "Did he not get the sign memo?"
βSpeak up, speak out, get in the way. Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.β β John Lewis
Looks like I survived the last round of layoffs, but the messaging from management definitely reads like a threat. "Oh we're done with the Reduction in Force, *unless* we fail to hit every one of our goals for the next three months."
In other words, everyone is on probation.
Brand matters. And positioning your brand to be βbooze for chickenshits and racist grandpasβ is definitely a choice.
Shadowrun (1996) | Sega Mega CD | Adventure with light RPG elements | Compile, Group SNE
It's 2053 and in Tokyo, corporations vie for dominance in the shadows via proxies. Unlike the earlier Sega Genesis and SNES adaptations of FASA's TTRPG, this Japan-only adaptation was more of a 'visual novel'!
Getting caught trying to cheat at poker, apparently.
I think I may have finally burned out on making custom settings for my TTRPG campaigns. As fun as it is to get lost in world-building, it's difficult to replicate the level of group buy-in that you can get with players who are already fans of the setting.
Just learned from one of his friends that George Lowe, voice of the titular character from Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, has died.

I wonder if this is how they're bringing Deathwatch back, in the same way that Imperium Maledictum is somewhat a new take on Dark Heresy. Also what's up with them releasing an Old World RPG, as if Warhammer Fantasy RPG doesn't already exist?
Hell yeah
doing this extra hard today because Brennan Lee Mulligan decided to do a wrestling themed mini campaign for Dimension 20, with 4 professional wrestlers as the party, and he's doing it in Dungeons And Fucking Dragons. its like a parody of itself

This painting of a slug by 18th century Japanese painter Nagasawa Rosetsu is my very favorite thing today
Ahahaha
Dolmenwood is a modified version of Old School Essentials, so it's pretty close to B/X D&D with several quality-of-play improvements, more classes, and support for its custom setting.
Dolmenwood has a hard class delineation - you pick an origin (race) and a class, and you get a handful of abilities from each. WWN has 3 abstract default classes and a 'custom' class that combines 2 of the others, but characters also have skills and power sets that aren't class-locked.
This was a great video and topic even if I had to break it into two sessions to finish it, which I'm sure probably doesn't help much on the analytics front.
Check out Worlds Without Number or Dolmenwood. Characters in both games have more to them than bog standard B/X; in WWNs case it's quite a bit more.
Honestly I'm glad that Warhammer: The Old World sets are as expensive as anything else GW makes, because there's not much else stopping me from coveting the Orc and High Elf army boxes. $350 for a kilo of injection molded plastic? Not today, thanks.

[βFantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, donβt we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if weβre partisans of liberty, then itβs our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.β]

YOUNG CARTOONIST: Boy, I sure love drawing for a living. I could do it all day, every day.
SATAN: And so you shall!
YOUNG CARTOONIST: But I never agreed to any sort of--
SATAN: Keep your soul. This one's on me. As a connoisseur of suffering, I just enjoy watching it play out.
WWN martials are really strong, despite the system's relative simplicity.
An example would be a character making an attack with a short sword would always inflict at least 2 damage on any attack; if the target has an AC of 15 or lower, missed attacks still inflict 2 damage.
Fighters have more effective Shock, so just getting near them is more dangerous.
Some games have minimum effect rules so even a 'miss' still has some impact. For example Worlds Without Number has the Shock system, which says attacks will still inflict a basic amount of damage to any target at or below a specific AC value if the RTH was a miss.
