And that message, of fairness and dignity, of justice and hope, that’s what the Rainbow Coalition was all about. In 1984 and then again in 1988, Jesse didn’t just speak to Black folks, he spoke to to white folks and Latinos, Asian Americans and the first Americans, he spoke to family farmers and environmentalists, he spoke to gay rights activists — when nobody was talking to gay rights activists — and blue-collar workers — and he gave them the same message that they mattered. That their voices and their votes counted, he invited them to believe — he invited us to believe in our own power to change America for the better.

For the latest Time cover story titled "Trump's War," which was published on Thursday, March 5, correspondent Eric Cortellessa questioned Trump about the details of the unfolding war with Iran. In a pointed moment, he was asked whether it's reasonable for Americans to have concerns about being attacked at home.

“I guess,” Trump, 79, responded. “But I think they’re worried about that all the time. We think about it all the time. We plan for it. But yeah, you know, we expect some things."

"Like I said, some people will die," the president added. "When you go to war, some people will die."

Two very different situations both required compassion, intelligence, presence of mind, and empathy to address Americans in a difficult time.

Barack Obama addressing the loss of a great American.

Donald Trump, shrugging off the deaths of multiple Americans.

Compare and contrast.

Of course we know that to a way-too-large contingent of Trump fans, Frederick Douglass's only trait they care about is not his wisdom.

I did not, and that was a mistake. I knew (thought I knew and was confident) that sneezing is not a covid symptom, and I was sneezing my head off. Turns out that's outdated now; new variants can make vaccinated people sneeze. Think I'll test tonight, even tho this has more or less cleared in 3 days.

Tuber the size of a large huddled person.

Welp. That IS a California manroot growing next to the patio. Almost impossible to kill, it can take years. And - second pic from Wikipedia - it's known for massive, feet-deep tubers; largest recorded, 467 lbs.

Maybe we should just move out.

We survived the night! This morning the taste buds are coming back. Either garlic works, or it would've eased up anyway. Science!

I'll tell you seriously, tho - this makes me appreciate the long-covid folks who've lost their sense of taste. I can't imagine having this long-term. Those poor people.

I know!! Chosen. In the worst possible way!

Well, I'll temper that: the worst possible would be its growing under the patio bricks. That would be the end of level ground back there.

What will escape me to my grave is why he's not transparent to the people he so openly manipulates. Why are they so blind to being played as patsies? Or do they know, do they see it plainly, and agree to suck it up to get what they want? A closed system of amorality?

The cruelty is the point. Trump doesn't give a rat's ass about any gender issues. He has no specific beliefs or convictions on the science, culture, or legal issues around the gender spectrum. It's just another way to performatively stomp on an underdog to solidify his power.

I feel so bad for Oliver. It's really hard being one of our cats.

What a life.

On the upside, it does seem to grow straight down, as opposed to originating under the bricks.

Maybe we should dig the whole thing out and put in a missile silo in the hole it leaves.

I was so tickled to see Netflix has The Cider House Rules just now. Excellent adaptation of a superb John Irving tale.

Then came the opening credits. Mirimax. Harvey Weinstein. I genuinely felt a bit ill. Brilliant flix that can never be purely experienced again.

Trump's had a hard-on* against USPS for years. This is just the latest volley.

(Ack! Sorry for the visual.)

Big thanks to @exposedbycmd.bsky.social and Open Secrets for their hard work on this stuff. If the ship eventually sinks, at least we'll know who opened the seacocks.

Not even a question. Both FedEx and UPS are members of ALEC - as is Amazon. www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/AL... ALEC collaborates with the anti-worker, pro-corporate Heritage Fndn.

Stupid head cold. I can't taste a thing. I'm putting massive cloves of garlic into every single thing I eat, trying to wake my taste buds back up. Nuthin'. More garlic - nuthin'. And even more garlic: nuthin'.

In other news, my husband wants separate bedrooms or a divorce, my choice.

Kristi Noem's departure from the White House will lower the bad makeup quotient there just a bit, with Orange Pancake now taking the decisive lead over Ridiculous Eyelashes.
