It just took me time to analyze, and as I've aged, I fully agree. Any clean good ending would have been a disservice to the readers and the story you'd built.
We didn't get what we wanted as an ending...but at least in my case, I got the ending I needed to think about.
Also since I'm here, I was one of the fans in summer 2001 who was disappointed by the ending. Then I saw your amazingly prescient letter on why you did it.
And as I've grown, I agree. Given the deconstructive nature of the series, a clean happy ending would have been literary malpractice.

Think of it this way. I have cheap rent at $800 today. If someone on SSI was here and wanted to move, they need rent for current place, rent for new place, and security deposit. Huh, that's $2400, and we haven't even booked the movers yet.
