Humanity heating planet faster than ever before, study finds Researchers identify sharp rise to about 0.35C every decade, after excluding natural fluctuations such as El Niño

It doesn’t matter whether the rate of global warming is increasing. It’ll never cease to amaze me that people don’t care that it’s happening at all. It should be the most alarming thing ever.

also notice ads in gmail

I am testing
Proton - personal
Ksuite - business

proton is easier to move to

it’s a pain in the ass to manage calendars. google is ubiquitous seamless to use that as I offboard from software, newsletters I hit barriers of p/w

it’s not easy to break up with google

Indigenous Australians share the racist messages they receive online: ‘No one’s feeling safe’ Australia has announced an inquiry into racism and hate directed at First Nations people, as Lidia Thorpe says racism has ‘never been this bad’

Important read about the incredibly ugly racist hate, abuse & threats Indigenous Australians get

"Many noted a marked uptick in violent rhetoric since the failed voice to parliament referendum in 2023."

“A lot of people in general feel really comfortable being racist.” 1/

A black and white cat lies on the pavement, strategically placing her head and shoulders so they stick out from under the gate of the house she lives in, so that people can stop and stroke her. Which they do.

The theme for today's #BirdOfTheDay is #StandingInWater.

Gone for a bit of an arty one today. Two waders which I think are probably redshanks; bills a bit short for godwits.

It's funny how we give importance to putting stuff in the rebuttal as authors that we don't care about at all as reviewers. The best example is setting a positive mood in the sense of "reviewers agreed we are actually quite amazing despite criticism" lol no don't tell me what I agreed to,

my thesis explored the camera as a social & economic reform tool I’d an observation on burden of documentation leading to burnout

Hine - child labour in the cotton fields, industrial labour
Lange - great depression, poverty & inequality
Salgado - mining labour, inequality, global south

Her work is phenomenal those images still raw & stark

Early photographers used photography as a tool for social change, she talked about how it was important not to remember everyday

Dorothea Lange’s work was/is a huge influence on me & featured in my thesis about Lewis Hine
along with Magnum Photographers & in particular Sebastian Salgado

all these decades later their work is still present another great quote from her

“Art is a by-product of an act of total attention.”

great shot

reminds me of my favourite Dorothea Lange quote

“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.”

we recognise wild nature is beautiful

how lucky are we to be present, have a technical object to capture it + ability to share it across the world…

A wooden flask or bottle from the early medieval period found in Leitrim, Ireland and now on display in the National Museum of Ireland Archaeology in Dublin

Leather bottle • Leitrim

This leather bottle or flask was found deep in a bog in Cloonclose, County Leitrim.

From the decoration, it is believed to date to the early medieval period, making the bottle at least a thousand years old.

The Anarchist Cookbook by William Powell, 1971, second printing. A large paperback book with a black cover, a white title and the author's name in red. Apparently, these days it's quite safe to allow readers to see it as most of the recipes for explosives etc are out of date. It does also have a list of drugs, which is how I know that if you eat enough banana skins, you'll hallucinate, but I'd think that was pretty likely anyway.

On my desk today: a piece of 1970s counter culture.

Made some updates to the API so it can display cartesian color models alongside the polar ones. It’s now much closer to what I originally had in mind, and it should make adding new models a lot easier in the future: meodai.github.io/color-palett...

Evening stroll and dog walk at Bamburgh Beach, Northumberland. Started off relatively cloudy but the clouds started to break up a little aand give some lovely soft light in the sky across the beach and rocks. A worthwhile wander.

Diesel at my local station is now over $4.40 a gallon. I was paying $3.75 two days ago. My truck is thirst. I guess I will be going nowhere fast this year.

DHS nominee Markwayne Mullin is one of the most active stock-traders in the Senate — and violated the STOCK Act against insider trading as recently as last August.

He currently holds stock in L3Harris, which has millions in contracts with ICE and FEMA.

This is a marvelous change not only for the Humpback whale 🐋 population but for all of us. We need to keep our gentle giants from going extinct.

The vessel is cup shaped with a slightly rounded base. It's rough in texture with no decoration. It's a natural buff colour with some darker patches around the top and down part of the side, caused by the firing process. The marks where the straw inclusions were cover most of the surface. Extra info for the photo: The vessel is several thousand years old and measures only 8 cm. I photographed it for the Garstang Museum of Archaeology's 'Before Egypt' exhibition back in 2019.

🏺A tiny (8 cm) pot found during John Garstang's excavations at the ancient site of Koshtamna in Sudan, seemingly plain until you realise all those marks in the surface were made by straw inclusions in the clay. It's details like that that make me happy ...
