Congratulats to Dr PΓa CortΓ©s Zuleta who has been awarded the L’OrΓ©al–UNESCO For Women in Science UK and Ireland Young Talent Award in the category of Physical Sciences. The prize was awarded for her work on developing novel techniques for the detection and characterisation of low-mass exoplanets.

Project: Modelling and Interpretation of Exoplanetary Atmospheres

Theme: Astrophysics

Supervisor: Dr Ryan MacDonald (rm400@st-andrews.ac.uk)

Description: Our knowledge of exoplanet atmospheres is undergoing a paradigm change following the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). High-quality spectroscopic observations of exoplanet atmospheres necessitate a careful reassessment of model assumptions that were sufficient in the pre-JWST era, in order to ensure the reliable inference of atmospheric properties (e.g. the chemical composition, temperature profile, and aerosol properties).

In this MSc (res) project, you will investigate new ways to improve state-of-the-art models of exoplanet spectra. You will also have the opportunity to apply these models to JWST observations of giant exoplanets, which will allow you to measure the atmospheric properties of worlds around other stars.

As a side story, I'm very proud of this paper. I found this signal at the end of my PhD, which was very chaotic. This paper saw me applying for postdocs, unemployed, and moving countries.
I could have written this paper maybe a year ago but it wasn't the right time. I'm just so happy that it's done!

Gl 725A b: a potential super-Earth detected with SOPHIE and SPIRou in an M dwarf binary system at 3.5 pc We report the discovery of a super-Earth candidate orbiting the nearby mid M dwarf Gl\,725A using the radial velocity (RV) method. The planetary signal has been independently identified using high-pre...

I'm slowly moving to this side of the internet so I'll share my latest paper here!

We report the discovery of one of the closest exoplanets to us! ✨Gl 725 A b✨ is potentially a super-Earth orbiting the primary component of a M dwarf binary system at only 3.5 pc.
